Metal seats

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone has done any restorations of the 70's seat pans and or cushions or pad backings. If so, I need some ideas, especially on pad backings (the part that is bolted to the seat pan). :D

Thanks guys, thought Mike did his but couldn't find it. Finally found it and just got through reading it. Don't know if I can come up with anything as nice as his, though. Has anybody actually tried to reproduce the metal pan or the backer plates that the cushions are glued to?

Unfortunately I did not draw the parts when I had them out of the cushions, but I can't imagine it would be too hard to reproduce either of the two plates. I can assist if you need it. I still have the patterns for the seat cover parts (somewhere). Perhaps someone out there has an uncovered seat they can take pictures of, and get some dimensions for you.

From memory, the plates look similar to the below image. I don;t have dimensions of them or a tracing of the parts. The bolts are held captive on the inside of the plates via stamping tabs, but I am sure they could be drilled and welded in place. The tab on the seat back is facing outwards and is the slide stop for the back cusion when installed on the seat plate.

That answers a lot, Mike. I wasn't sure if the pad backing plates were made out of wood, plastic, or metal. Luckily I found a seat with no padding and a seat that appears to be salvageable with pads, just a couple of tears in it. I think it was the edge material that was torn.

That's great. Like I said in the original seat thread, you should probably replace the seat cushions though. I used the originals in mine, but later found they are flattened and somewhat harder than I suspect they were when new. I guess after 35 or so years on a tractor they would be that way. The cushion material can be purchased at any large fabric store.

I bet some gel seat cushion, like for bikes, would be really comfy. Should have the seats in tomorrow, will see how bad the rip really is.
