HELP! need spindle ASAP

Recommended Posts

rodco

Help.. I need my tractor to move dirt this weekend. I am having a truck load of top soil delivered and today my RIGHT handle spindle on my C 161 tractor broke. The spindle snapped off and the tie rod broke. Can the spindle be welded?

Is this a different spindle than the normal c-161's? I ask because it has a factor front loader- Ark550. Will another C161 axle fit?

I see this part #- 105968 on the toro site..is that correct?

The poor tractor is stranded in the road.

Any help is appreciated.

Post the model number from the ID tag. I have a spindle from a C-161 81-16KS01.

It is compatible with 1977 B-80, B-100, C-120, C-160 also.

I would replace your spindle although it could be welded, :omg: Rick

Considering the loading on your particular C-161, it

might not be advisable to try to weld the broken kingpin.

It likely cannot be welded to be as strong as original.

There isn't any extra length in the kingpin to allow

a sound weld with the arm. Just my $.02.

Hope you can find a replacement quickly.

That is the HD spindle too! Never broke one myself. I would think :omg: you could put a regular spindle on there with the original tire. I have never really looked to see what differences there are between the HD spindle and the original spindle. I know it has the beefed up section. Wonder if the axle shaft is larger???

I got my 3 sets of HD spindles and tires way back when they were cheap and hardly anyone ordered them, I never looked at them that closely...

If you have access to a machine shop, the arm

could be bored out and a new (scratch) kingpin

could be fitted and welded to the arm.

There isn't much way you can weld that with the original pieces. You could cut the spindle below tie rod end clean out the hole and then weld in a new piece below the tie rod plate. Looks like you need to weld up the tie rod hole and drill it, got some play there.

Here is the ID info. I can get a replacement spindle on Ebay from a guy in Jersey, but I want to make sure it will still fit. Are the spindle shaft the same size? What makes the Heavy duty one..so Heavy.

The standard ones are 3/4". what size are your HD ones.

To answer your question the bent plate welded under the tie rod plate it isn't there on a standard one.

"To answer your question the bent plate welded under the tie rod plate it isn't there on a standard one."

I know about the beefup plate, I have 3 tractors with the same HD spindle. I was curious about other specs...I don't have a spare HD spindle off a tractor to compare to the standard one...

The HD Spindle Kit comes with new wheels and tires so that is where I think it might be different.

At least you have the loader to raise the front up so you don't need a jack! :omg:

I can get the replacement regular spindle, but how do I even begin to look up the part number for the heavy duty spindle? I checked the toro website, but did not see any options for "special" spindles.

Thanks

Rob

How do you begin to look up the part number???

Ask me, I got 3 kits! :omg: Heck, I even still have the original box the kit came in. The whole kit was $160 or so MANY years ago. Came with 2 HD spindles, tires, wheels, and all hardware. Then, word got out on the internet WH site and Toro saw they were selling a bunch of these kits and the price skyrocketed! Don't even know if you can still order it...

Use 80490 for the model number. I just looked it up on SEPW.com and it is available, around $40. That number is for 1979. The ones I bought are 80493.

Rodco-

In view of all the above and with time short, I believe a good

machine shop can bore out what's left of the assembly and weld

in a newly fabricated king pin (the part that broke off).

Just to clear the the names of things- the spindle is the axle

on which the wheel mounts, the king pin is the part of the assembly

that fits into cross beam, and the steering arm is the part that

engages the tie rod.

The new king pin will have enough purchase once the hole is bored

out and welded on the bottom end.

But you need a good machine shop.

There is a NOS kit on ebay with a buy it now price of $249.95. I am in no way connected with the seller or anything, I just wanted to pass it along in case it might be of some help. It comes with both spindles and the wheels and tires. I dont know if this is a good deal or not, but I remember seeing this thread yesterday and I saw the auction a few minutes ago , its a new listing and I thought of you. The listing says...." Wheel Horse heavy duty front wheel kit for loader. Fits 300 400 500 series". It appears that the seller is a dealer.

I would have just included the auction number in my post but I dont know if it is against the rules.I wrote down the auction number so if you want it either email me or send a message to me , if a Moderator says it is permitted I can just post it here. I just dont want to break any rules.

I hope this helps,

John

SEPW- Not available (although listed as in stock)

Ebay Auction- Fraud-Not even available

This is the problem with using older equiptment.
