My Wheel Horse Died

Recommended Posts

The 20 year old 16 HP vanguard Briggs & Stratton has been giving me trouble when I needed it most. It finally gave up for good about a week ago. I had checked on parts to rebuild it back last year. The parts for it were just to high, couldn't see putting that much money in it.

Placed an order with Jacks Small Engines last Thursday, arrived Monday around lunch time. Pulled the old engine an installed the new one yesterday and today. Here are some pictures.

Needed a hood stretcher the hood hits the breather housing but it will close. The 18 HP has a wider cover with screen behind the rewind hope this keeps the trash out.

I also rewired it, bought an engine with wiring and switch installed. The wiring was just long enough to reach the dash, added a wire from the amp gage. Connected the lights, hour meter, added power to the oil pressure light. Hooked up the oil pressure gage. Just need to put the gas tank and battery back on it will be ready to go.

That adds a whole new look to it. I had to look twice at the old and new pic's, they look similar to each other. Good job! :omg:

Plus it amazes me how you can put the different front wheels and spindles on. How is that done?

This is from an old post:

Here is my front wheel bearings went with packed taper roller bearings.

The hubs, spindles, tires, and wheels are 3500 lbs. trailer tires. I sawed off about 2" or so off the 1 3/8" spindle drilled it to fit over the tractor spindle cross drilled it between the bearing surfaces. I also sawed off part of the tractor spindle. Welded the end and both sides in the cross drilled holes. They have been on the tractor 12 years. I bought all the parts from Northern, got there about 10 minuets before they closed and grabbed up the parts. The hubs I got don't fit those wheels, I had to turn them down. The hubs that fit have loose studs.

Absolutely incredable. A very nice looking set-up. Makes me want to put a twin in one of mine.
