Horse'n Around 22 #26 Posted April 28, 2010 If it were me, I would keep the WH.... I have been working on my neighbors 316 JD and while it is a very well built machine, I agree 100% when folks say that they are more complicated to work on than a WH they are defineately not kidding. I will say it is well built but that comes at a price, the WH is just as good in my opinion and much, much easier and fun to work on than the JD. I can honestly say that I can not use the word fun with my experience with this JD If I were to have to choose I would not hesitate to keep theWheelHorse. In the end they are probably both good tractors, one question might be would you feel comfortable working on it yourself if it needs work other than routine upkeep? These are just my thoughts on this though, John
JimD 3,345 #27 Posted April 28, 2010 I love my horses, but i've been lookin at deeres now and then, just haven't found a deal that suits me (i'm cheap), but i figure i learned to work on my horses and i could learn to work on a deere too. If you like the deal, buy the tractor and enjoy it!
firemart 0 #28 Posted April 28, 2010 Well. for better or worse, I didn't buy the JD. He wanted money up front before delivery, after we had agreed on a different scenario, he could/would not tell me how many hours or how long he has had it, even though I asked a lot of questions. Sometimes, when something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

jpmcleod 4 #30 Posted April 28, 2010 T-Mo. I apoligize if you or anytone took my previous post as meaning I think this is "funny". It's just that W9JAB really got admonished early on for saying what he really thought. Between the two posts, it has really peaked mine and a lot of others interest. I think rather than "funny" it is entertaining in respect to trying to help a fellow member who finally succeeded in getting his WH started after receiving so much help from other members and immediately wants to trade it for another brand of tractor. I have been sincere in my effortes to help Firemark and so have so many others. I may get thrown off this post and if I do, it's been fun, but I have to ask. Why do the moderator(s) get upset with members for being honest even thought you (the moderator(s)) may not agree with what the member posted. I personally did not feel the first post by W9JAB was out of line but he sure got slammed. The same moderator(s) now allow the member asking for help (and getting a lot of it) get upset and print profanity but he was not admonished. Love you guys, but I had to put in my 2 cents worth. T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,505 #31 Posted April 28, 2010 Well. for better or worse, I didn't buy the JD. He wanted money up front before delivery, after we had agreed on a different scenario, he could/would not tell me how many hours or how long he has had it, even though I asked a lot of questions. Sometimes, when something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The JD 210 wouldn't have an hour meter on it, so I can understand him not knowing how many hours it had, but he should know when he got it, and how long he had it. With that knowledge, he could have come up with approximate number of hours HE put on it, but still wouldn't have a clue (unless he bought it new) how many actual hours were on the machine. To tell you the truth, you can find a JD 200 series cheaper than $500 (to me that would be at the top of the value range for one). I bought my 1979 214 in 2001, complete with ags, chains, wheel weights, 47 deck and 42 inch snow blade (it even came with the service manual), and extra set of rear tires, all for $650. And it ran flawless. I sold my 1978 210 back in April 2008 for $400 and it had the sweetest running Kohler I've owned and it look good also. Keep looking, there are values out there. Unfortunately this time of year, people are wanting mowers to mow their lawn, so a good deal is harder to find.

Honesty is one thing, but there is a way to be honest without publicly poking fun at a member. I admire Firemart, because he asked the questions and then took the advice he got and put it to use. He should be patted on the back for going out of his comfort zone and doing something, successfully I might add, that he hadn't the experience doing. Instead of publicly humiliating him, he should be commended. I just don't seem the humor in someone asking a question and then being laugh out. If I took W9JAB posts the wrong way, I apologize, but there is a way to be honest without ridiculing people. I don't mind people voicing their opinion - we all have one - but when it comes to bashing other members, then we as, moderators, have to step in. We will and do make mistakes, but we do try and keep this place fair, open, informative, without having a member ridiculed or looked down on publicly. I also apologize to you if I took your post the wrong way. Again, we all make mistakes.
jpmcleod 4 #33 Posted April 28, 2010 Thanks for your respnse. I appreciate it. I am earnest in saying I wish I could go to Firemarks house and help him. I see he started another post regarding the carburator. I could really help him on that as I have overhauled just about every one I have. I'm glad he is keeping the WH and hopefully one day soon he will accomplish his repairs. Be willing to bet that when he finishes this one he will get the bug and get another. We all do. As I have previously said, I enjoy reading thei site, it is the best one I know of. I have three JD's and I hardly ever go to their site. I too have the WH bug. The only cure is another one. You guys do a great job and my entire family enjoys this site.
Horse'n Around 22 #34 Posted April 29, 2010 By sticking with his WH, the experience he has gained as well as what he is going to learn in the future working on it are going to do wonders for his confidence. He has a lot of folks with a wealth of knowlege on his side. Some folks just need a bit of guidance and then it just clicks from then on. John
6wheeler 603 #35 Posted May 7, 2010 :D I know this will seem outdated. But, I think JD's are as good as my wheelhorses. They all mow great, they pull whatever I try to make them. I know the limitations for each machine. And, if I try to exceed what they are capable of, Well, I guess I'll be fixing them... I have changed belts on both of my JD's ,a 116 with a nasty 20hp Kohler upgrade(I think I hear a transaxle cracking ) an stx 38 that turns on a dime. And my WH C-165. The greens are definately more complicated. But, it ain't like I gotta do it every day. My brothers 214 JD is an awesome machine. And like T-Mo says, the variator rules. (when working) I service that mower too. Not that big of a deal. Buy whatever you want, Or should I say, Buy what you need, to do the job. Save the repairables for hobbies , or an excuse to hang out in the garage and spend money. Either way, have fun.. Pat
