nick909 0 #1 Posted April 23, 2010 I have a 1995 416-H with a 42 inch side discharge deck. I have had a problem with grass cuttings and leaves collectiong on the fan screen, I am concerned about the air flow over the engine. It seems that the 42 inch side discharge deck allows grass and leaves to blow out the front of the deck which then gets sucked up by the engine fan on the screen. Thinking about dirt track racers who have a shaker screen in front of their radiator, to keep the dirt off the radiator, I made a screen for my 416-H. I used 1/4 inch hardware cloth and formed a screen from under the engine fan to about half way up the fan screen. My screen is about 4 iches out from the fan screen and covers the fan shrould from front to back. It works great keeping debris off the fan intake screen, so now I do not worry about engine cooling air flow. It's not beautiful but it works. The hardware cloth collects 95% of the grass and whatever and the engine sreen stays clean.
rickv1957 72 #2 Posted April 23, 2010 Do you have the deflector on your deck,Rick
nick909 0 #3 Posted April 23, 2010 If you asking about the deflector off the side, no. I do have the deck set to cut the grass at 3 inches, so the front of the deck is not hugging the ground. When I am cutting grass, paper, leaves, etc. is blowing around the front of the deck, along with grass shooting out the side of the deck. Apparently the engine fan is strong enough that it sucks up the blowing debirs and collects it on the fan sceen.
Shuboxlover 478 #4 Posted April 24, 2010 I have that problem too when I use my 42" deck, I just always have to remember to clean it every 10 min or so. But mine is on a GT-1642 p.s. I don't have a deflector shield on mine :omg:
