dw1973 17 #1 Posted April 22, 2010 Has open grill so I am not sure if this is a 551 model. I am looking at buying it. Approximate value in midwest? Has snow blade that comes with it.
CasualObserver 3,408 #2 Posted April 22, 2010 No, it is a 550. The slotted grille hood is the service replacement. The foot rests, the clutch pedal, and the mower deck are all 1960. The 551 would have had cast iron oval foot rests, a cast iron clutch pedal and the deck would have wheels. Also, the 551 would have had the "new" two piece uni-drive instead of the three piece and the battery box would be built into the frame in front of the engine. Value would depend a lot on whether or not it's running, how many competing buyers there are, where exactly you are in the mid-west, and what the owner wants to get out of it. Personally... I'd say as it sits, buying it from a non-collector private party... $150-200. If you were buying it from a collector... I'd guess closer to $500.

dw1973 17 #4 Posted April 22, 2010 $300 is the asking price. Seller has not had it running since he bought it. It is located in Michigan

clintonnut 126 #9 Posted April 22, 2010 The machine in front looks like a Rugged Rider with a Clinton VS1200! Give him $50 for that! Charlie
dw1973 17 #10 Posted April 23, 2010 Mower in front is a Springfield. Looks like a vertical shaft motor on it.
WHRNaddict 5 #11 Posted April 23, 2010 I usually don' have much much to say, but i just had to comment on the the vented hood. I just purchased one like as a spare for my 401 & 551 as I understand it WH offered it as the replacement. It has the T & C setup for 61 models even though it's 550. Sure wish us southern folks could find deals like that, I'd have it on the truck in a heart beat. Great find !

abrown0920 0 #13 Posted April 23, 2010 I am not an expert on these but it sure looks straight and complete. I also really think it cool how nice the seat cushion is. I would load that up in a heartbeat.
Coadster32 793 #14 Posted April 23, 2010 secondwhy does the motor on that 550 look so big Cuz that's the biggest one you can get in there without modifying the hood. You need the stubby spark plug in the block also.
rusted and busted 0 #15 Posted April 23, 2010 is it the factory installed motor? ive got what i thought was a 400 suburban which looks the same way, just ask ing and trying to learn.

VinsRJ 721 #22 Posted April 24, 2010 I just sold one of those replacement hoods on evil bay..... it didn't have a hole or plug under the steering shaft. I belive it was a '61. What did the hood sell for on evilbay? Curious. Hood sold for $65. Tank straps were missing and a couple extra holes were drilled into it. Buyer was super happy with it, thats all that counts :omg:
WHRNaddict 5 #23 Posted April 24, 2010 :omg: Hey Vince, I'm the happy owner of the replacement hood you sold. I freaked when you said it didn't have a hole or plug below the steering shaft so I ran out to the shop to ck and it does have a hole. Thank God!
