Flat or Gloss

Recommended Posts

Save Old Iron

Just a quick question for those who have actually experienced what a new plastic dash on C series looked like.

WHEN THEY WERE NEW, was the plastic a gloss finish or a flat finish ? These are the two choices of finish I have to choose from for DUPLICOLOR's vinyl dye spray.

I'm sure the correct answer is going to be "semi-gloss" but I thought I would give it a try.

:omg: please - this is not a poll to let me know what finish YOU like - I'm trying to get accurate info on what these panels actually looked like as far as sheen / no sheen when new.

thank you , come again !!

I'm sure as you said semi gloss, you might try flat and buff with a terry cloth (old towel) to a semi gloss finish, or use a little armor all on it to get the right sheen.

By the way you can use some paint I think it's rust oleum called fusion it's made for plastic's, vinyl dye is not really made for hard plastic, it's more for like the seats a softer material.

Chuck,

As you know, ever since Mike (MikesRJ) put up the tutorial for dash restorations, I have been doing quite a few of them (some for money, some not). I have not seen a new dash, however in my humble opinion, and by looking at the backs of many, it appears that they were on the shiny side of SATIN. Not semi-gloss, not flat. Therefore, when I restore them, I spray a coat of Krylon BBQ & Stove Paint on it. (Krylon #1618 BBQ Black) It bonds well with the plastic, only takes 15 minutes to dry, and looks great upon completion. What's important is that you don't apply too heavy a coat. You only want to color it, not fill in the little holes in the A's and the R's. You want the embossing to remain as sharp as possible.

Kelly,

Krylon makes the Fusion paint. I have spoken with the folks at Krylon, and they tell me that Fusion is really not much different than their other paints. It has a little more of whatever the ingredient is that bonds to plastic, but all of their paints bond to most plastics.

I happen to like Krylon because I am an impatient person and I like the short drying time.

Guess I got sucked into this "dye" stuff.

I have used fusion on kids toys and it does work great. Actually used the textured version of the flat black on a few 500 series gas tanks and it holds up quite well. The textured finish takes away some of the "plastic" look too.

The DUPLICOLOR dye actually holds extremely well on polyethylene - I was really surprised on how much I had to abrade it to get it to scrape off. It does bond well to the plastics.

I sprayed a C175 dash with the DUPLICOLOR flat - looks great - seem very scratch resistant , so no complaints.

:omg:

I just scrubbed mine with dawn and painted it. Since this will be my everyday tractor I was worried about any type of satin/gloss finish showing wear.
