papaglide 542 #1 Posted April 20, 2010 I sold one of my cubs and am looking for another Wheel Horse. I found a 414-8 with 42" mulch deck in good shape for cheap($125). Problem is that the tractor runs but won't shift gears. I am in need of any theories as to why this is happening and if this could be fixed relatively easily. Basically is this something I should consider buying? Thanks.

papaglide 542 #3 Posted April 20, 2010 That's what I thought too. I guess I am just looking for ideas as to what may be wrong with it from easy to extreme. With my limited mechanical abilities, I have to pass on the more extensively broke tractors. Might it be an easy fix? Are there possibities that its not major? clintonnut 126 #4 Posted April 20, 2010 For that cheap a shifter problem is nothing. Is it the high/low or the main gear shift. Does it not move at all? Charlie
Raider12 13 #5 Posted April 21, 2010 I know I would pass that up even if the wife was with me. But if nothing else, look at it this way, the mower deck normaly cost about $250 and up alone. That tranny problem wouldn't stop me at all. In most cases it's not that expensive of fix.

That tranny problem wouldn't stop me at all. In most cases it's not that expensive of fix. That make a good deal of sense. Are tranny's hard to work on? Hopefully I can check it out tomorrow and I will post what I found out. Thanks for the help guys.
