There were many vertical shaft Wheel Horse models produced from 1969 to at least 2004 that fall under your "vertical crank front mounted motors" description.

I may build a lawn mower racer, maybe just for fun, the 212-5 model looks like a good candidate or any of the B81, 111, 112, 115 models.
