rydogg 186 #1 Posted April 2, 2010 Just picked up this C81 the po said that the motor will run for a while then start to slow down and get stuck and then if you let it cool down and take off the screen from the flywheel and put a breaker bar on the nut it will turn over and you can use it again until it gets stuck. What could be wrong with this motor?
jpmcleod 4 #2 Posted April 2, 2010 Boy that is weired. It almost sounds like the piston is swelling up from heat (which I doubt) or the cylinder is egg shaped and when it gets hot. it jams the piston. Another could be the crank bearing not getting oil. I can't wait to see the responses to your question. I know they are air cooled and sounds like to me it is getting hot.

Duff 206 #5 Posted April 3, 2010 Ok, fellas, I probably know the least about engines of anyone on this forum but regardless of what the symptoms are, I'd be tearing that motor down before I started it again. My thinking is that whatever is going wrong inside has to be creating ungodly stress on things, and using a breaker bar to free it up is only adding to that stress. Sooner or later something is going to come apart - or more likely several things. What may only be a few hours of time and a few dollars in parts now could avoid a completely blown up engine in the possibly very near future. Just a humble observation from a backyard mechanic....... Duff By the way...did the PO happen to say anthing about the motor having been rebuilt? The tins look a little too shiny compared to the rest of the machine (which itself looks like a pretty decent tractor!)
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #6 Posted April 3, 2010 I vote for connecting rod/crankshaft journal seizure, but........ There's also a very slight possibility that the camshaft is seized to the pin on which it rotates. I really doubt you could repetitively free the engine after it quits turning if that is the case. @ Duff: Kohler had much better painting techniques then WH, so it's not unusual to see shiny engine tins on a rusty old tractor. This 855 I had is a good example:
