HankB 16 #1 Posted March 28, 2010 I know how much you guys like "tractor porn" so I took a break yesterday and snapped this. It seems like well past time to take the snow blade off and the ground was dry enough for tilling. I'm going to return an old garden to grass (except for the spot where the rhubarb is coming up and probably a small spot for a smaller garden. ) I got this last fall and this is the first time I've really given it a work out. It generally works well except in the really heavy stuff where it can stall out. That's probably made worse by the undersize pulley on the tiller. Some things I learned along the way: [*:3vmvs4ls]When you're looking for a tiller, make sure that all of the little bits are there including any adapters you need for your particular tractor. In my case I needed an adapter kit that had the rock shaft and a plate that bolts to the tiller. It did not include the cable or cable guide that routes the cable from the rock shaft forward past the trans. All of these extra parts ran me well past $100. I could have had a newer tiller with all of that stuff for the same money.[*:3vmvs4ls]If you fab your own lift cable, using two cable clamps at each end really does make a difference.[*:3vmvs4ls]Do not use plastic coated cable. You want the full diameter that fits the guide to carry the weight. I wound up using a 3/16 cable.[*:3vmvs4ls]Make sure the rear flap stops are properly mounted. Mine were installed backwards and allowed the flap to get pulled into the tines, resulting in a bent flap and bent shroud. It took a few hours if extra effort to get all of that sorted. I also noticed that steering was a little sketchy with those turf tires on the front. I wonder if SWMBO would notice a set of tri-ribs on the credit card. Fluid fill and they'd help for plowing snow too. :D
