Movement in front axle

Recommended Posts

I know alote of people have seen this problem before. I have a 1257 with alot of slope in the front axle. My question is what is most people doing around this problem. Can the front axle be bushined or perhaps a new pin is needed to correct this. Or is another front axle needed?

In my personal experience, I've found most of the time it's the bolt that's worn.

If it were me, I'd raise the front up, remove the bolt holding the axle in the pivot and take it from there.

For what it's worth.

Axle can be bushed and a new pin installed to remove excess play,Rick

In all the tractors I have looked at, I have found very little wear in the axle itself, the pin that goes thru the middle seems to be the item that wears the most.

Last time I checked a new one from Toro was about $12, so thats a no brainer, you couldnt make one for that.

Also it is common for the tab that retains that pin to break its ear off, which leads to the axle wobbling around.

Another problem I have seen is where the two plates that sandwhich the axle are too far apart, letting the axle move back and forwards a little. There is some pics of my fix for that in this thread (3/4 of the way down the first page):
