Z-Ville_Guy 0 #1 Posted March 24, 2010 I just joined this forum and want to find out what tractor I have. I'm from Zanesville, Ohio and have never restored a tractor before but am very motivated to do so! I saw a picture on the site that looks like it this but just not sure? http://photobucket.com/Z-Ville_Guy Click on my home when you get there to view images. I my grandfather left me this tactor and I want to restore it, i just don't know where to start! Last time it was started was around 1990 or so, has been stored in shed since then. I tried to upload this picture to the forum as an avatar but they wouldn't let me! It has a 4 HP Kohler, seriel # A32558. I have the mower deck as well. Any info would be great! Manual, parts, etc! I recently got some help from a member Dresden_Guy who sent me link to a service manual that I printed off for the 401! Rear wheels were locked when I brought it home but opened gear box and sprayed PB Blaster, now they move! Question abouts how to get hood off, do I have to remove steering column and what about that metal ring that is sticking out from my hood, havent seen that on any Wheel Horse? Any help would be appreciated! Very excited to get started.........just don't where to begin! Thanks, http://photobucket.com/Z-Ville_Guy

tgranthamfd 29 #5 Posted March 24, 2010 :omg: I think you are right on with the 401. Looks to be solid and complete. A couple of the moderators are the utmost authorities on the Suburbans. If it comes down to it, there are a couple of really good posts on the tranny rebuilds, with loads of pictures. You can, also, get about any manuals that you want from MikesRj. I am sure he will be on here soon and post a link. Once again, :D

clintonnut 126 #21 Posted March 24, 2010 Nice tractor! Some people may disagree with me but I think that is an original heat shield. My 401 has the holes in the exact place as that tractor for a heat shield. Maybe WH ran out of them so they substituted with those. What is your casting date on the tranny? Mine is F27-1 (May 27, 1961) Charlie

Z-Ville_Guy 0 #23 Posted March 25, 2010 Wow!!!! You guys are amazing!! Feels like I have already made many few friends!!! Update............... the numbers on my tranny are 018-1 Is that Ocotber 18th 1961? FIXED THE GEAR BOX, NOW IN ALL GEARS SEEM TO WORK.............NOT LOCKED UP ANYMORE! Pb blasted alot today ........ as well as cleaned the airfilter, poped off kill switch cover (think thats what that switch is) checked the champion (J17LM), to see what I needed for a new one. Actually the sparkplug didn't look that bad, as well as the airfilter. Tightened the bolts behind throttle and choke b/c when I was pulling on them they were actually not very tight and about pulled them thru ! Put gas as well as new oil in. Put air in rear tires and the day before and they seem to be holding up nice! Found and opened the fuel line and began pulling to see what I had! Good compression on the pulls but no start! Didn't think it would happen just wanted to see where I stood! Changed the range of the choke and throttle and pulled some more........oops cord broke!!! Learned who to recoil and knot the cord, interestering...........had to hold it a certain way to get it to crank? Anyway........... didn't spend alot of time on her today, just feeling my way around alittle! Questions ..........want to get to the carb and other things under the hood? Whats the best way to take the hood off? Take the steering wheel off and knobs off the throttle and choke? Is this possible? There is a little hole with a pin on the steeling wheel, I PB blasted it just in case I take that route? Whay do I have that round hook type thing on my hood? It has a hole on each of the hooks and it looks like maybe it was used for an attachment in the front? Don't think its part of original model? In the regards to the Heat shield, I remember how hot that would be on my legs as a kid when I rode it around! I remember him getting it and putting it on, not sure if it is original? Thanks for your welcomes and remember that I am as green as they come to this project so bare with me and my questions! :D
