Torino 14 #1 Posted March 20, 2010 Picked up a 520H today. Looks rough but runs great. Guess if I found one that ran and looked good I would have nothing to do. Don't know what year can not find SN. Looked under seat but is not there. Going to need a lot of little things. Here is a wonderful list of things I will need help with. The hydraulic cylinder is working but the deck will not move. The hydo lever does not want to stay where you put it. Where can I find a shop manual online? Will try to have some pics soon. Can you tighten the throttle? It will not stay where you put it. Torino 14 #2 Posted March 20, 2010 Does the mower have more that three fuses?
Operator 7 #3 Posted March 20, 2010 I'll try to help on a couple things; Hydro lever - under the seat is the adjustment for that, in the hole. Tighten on the cam nut just tweek it alittle then try lever. Hyd. lift - Get under tractor on left side and check around lift cylinder to see what isn't lifting/moving. Deck linkage hangs on lift arm pin. Shop manual - On e-bay I get mine from "Docpedalcar" great reproductions of the origionals, not too bad on pricing. The "mower" hasn't any fuses, The Tractor does though, Yup three fuses plus one spot to hold a spare. Hope this helps. Randy
sorekiwi 761 #4 Posted March 20, 2010 You can download the owners manual, engine manual, trans manual and parts list from the Toro site. You'll need a serial # though. Maybe someone can post one that works? (Mine didnt have a serial sticker either).
Fiddlestix 0 #5 Posted March 20, 2010 And while you are at the TORO site downloading manuals... You MUST download the Toro Demystification Guide !! Especially if it is a Toro built 520...especially if it has been abused... especially since it IS a 520...and especially if you have any challenges with electrical trouble shooting. The Demystification Guide goes into great detail on diagnosing electrical issues that none of the other manual deal with at all. It applies to most everything newer than 1985 and many many people overlook this very handy manual expecting the service manual to have everything. I really like my 520H but I swear I read here and other forums, that just about 75% of the 520's out there (mine included) that have seen some neglect, there will be electrical issues. Some major...some minor. Good luck with it, it is a great tractor! :omg:
Herbl 10 #6 Posted March 20, 2010 I have gone on Toro's website and can not find the Toro Demystification Guide. Could you please tell where it is, thanks...
Fiddlestix 0 #7 Posted March 20, 2010 I have gone on Toro's website and can not find the Toro Demystification Guide. Could you please tell where it is, thanks... I cannot blame you one bit for not being able to find it! That site is the daggum most cornfusing place. And I KNOW there are inconsistencies... sometimes it works...sometimes not. For instance, I cannot do the parts look up routine without putting my serial number in. Other people claim (and their own instructions say you can) enter "None" for the serial. I get nothing without the serial. Oh well. Anyway try this. Go to the main Toro site where you get the rest of the Toro owner's manuals. When it asks for model enter 72083 . I know this is not your model. It is a small rider. But a newer model that the site seems to always open up the option for the demysification guide. When that page loads click on "manuals" and the Toro Riding Products Demystification Guide will be there. It is 523 pages and 30+ meg. Have a good connection! It covers all rider products from 1985-2001. If you successfully download the guide, the 520H will be waaaay back in section 7 about page 97 or 100 and each system will be treated seperately. Herbl 10 #8 Posted March 20, 2010 Fiddlestix I tried what you stated and the manual doesn't appear, I hope I'm just doing it incorrectly and not that Toro has taken it off the website.. :omg:

Torino 14 #10 Posted March 21, 2010 Got all of the manuals Got all the gauges working except the gas gauge. As far as the deck I can not tell what is wrong. Things are moving but being new to this setup I can't tell what is right and what is wrong. There is a chain connected to the lift is that suppose to be there? Things are moving but being new to this setup I can't tell what is right and what is wrong. There is a chain connected to the lift is that suppose to be there? So far so good. Yup the chain should be hooked to the "lift arm" then on the end of lift arm is a pin that sits sideways ok? then that pin fits into a slot on the deck linkage. Understand my way of explaining? Hope so. Randy

Torino 14 #15 Posted March 21, 2010 Thanks for all the help so far. Looks like I'm going to have to take the deck off to see what's not working. From the Onan numbers I can read the tractor is around an 88. Of couse I can't read the deck model no. either, can someone give me the deck model no. for a 48 inch deck? Torino 14 #18 Posted March 22, 2010 Got the deck to lift. Seems someone had the lift chain in the wrong hole. I love those easy fixes. Looks like I have everything fixed on the above list. The gas gauge was the only gauge I could not get to work. It started working today on the test mow. Need to look over all the connections and grounds. I worked on the throttle but can't seem to fix it, have to get a new one. Still looking for a shop manual. Going to change all the fluids, filter and take the deck off and get it ready for mowing. :omg:
Operator 7 #19 Posted March 23, 2010 That's great! On the throttle issue, Did you pull off the panel by the choke and throttle levers? Maybe check and see if you can tighten the pivot bolt just a little bit. Randy
Torino 14 #20 Posted March 23, 2010 I did take it off but it does not have a screw it is a rivet. Tried squeezing it but that did not work. I also need the numbers for all the filters :omg:
Operator 7 #21 Posted March 23, 2010 Unless someone else chimes in I can get you filter numbers tomorrow, Hores are sleepin now. Bummer on the throttle idea! I've never had that problem, yet. Randy
sorekiwi 761 #22 Posted March 23, 2010 I'd try squeezing that rivet again, last time I checked a throttle cable was close to $50... :omg:
Torino 14 #23 Posted March 23, 2010 The hood on this one is dented. Will a hood from a 414 fit this tractor? If so will all hoods from 300,400 and 500 series fit?
Operator 7 #24 Posted March 24, 2010 Filter numbers: Wix brand Trans. 51410 " Onan oil 51516 " Air 46094 Cheapy brand "Primeline" Auto Value 7-02247 Air Onan 140-1228 Air Hoods should be all the same 300 - 400 - 500 series Randy
sorekiwi 761 #25 Posted March 24, 2010 I think the hoods are different to accomodate the different dashboards. I dont know the maroon stripe tractors very well, but I know the hood off a 312A is different in the dash area from the one on my 520.
