Removing a decal/sticker in one piece

Recommended Posts

Butch

Anyone have any ideas how to remove a sticker without destroying it? My 314 has it's mint serial number sticker still on it and I would like to take it off without destroying it. My only other option would be to work around it which I prefer not to do.

Some good tips in this thread.

I realize the point of that thread is to remove residual adhesive, but some of the tips apply.

how to remove a sticker without destroying it?

removing a vinyl sticker without distorting or destroying the sticker has always proved to be beyond my talents.

the best I hope for is to get the sticker off without destroying the paint or leaving a large amount of residue behind

maybe some enterprising individual can come up with some metal tag to replace the original sticker - maybe a "Custom restoration by ......... " and have the ability to etch or burn in the tractors original serial # with the restorer's name.

How's that for pride in your work and signing your name to to !!

3M makes an adhesive remover that won't damage paint and you can get it at O'Reilly's or NAPA. I've seen it at both places. You just spray it on and let it sit for a minute and wipe a away. Sometimes a soft plastic bondo spreader helps.

Yeah my problem isn't with the sticky residue. My problem is getting the sticker off in one piece without destroying. It's the factory paper ID sticker with the model and serial number on it. I've stripped the paint off the rest of the fender and just left the factory sticker. I was hoping to somehow remove it in one piece, paint the tractor and then reapply the sticker. My wife has a steamer for taking off wall paper and I considered that.

A small amount of heat from a heat gun will soften adhesive and remove decal carefully,Rick

I've done it successfully by heating the back side of the metal - the glue will soften before the sticker burns.

A heat gun on the backside of the metal, going slowly; but first put some Masking Tape over the top decal, outside side. There is wide tape available, but overlapping 2" masking tape will work, two or three layers works best, and also the 'Blue or Green' Removable painting tape is safer, gently pull the tape/decal away as you heat. To reuse; flatten the decal for days/weeks, then apply spray mounting adhesive, and apply using the soap/water trick.

Here is a tip before you screw up the decal take very good pictures of it, and record all the numbers, then try heat on the back side and a new razor blade slide under the decal laying the blade almost flat and push with a little rocking motion I save decals at work all the time like that, I don't even use heat sometimes it's best to do it cold.
