ricksrj58 273 #1 Posted March 15, 2010 i have a c-81 8 spd and i am picking up a c-160 with a good 16 hp kohler. my question is which would be simpler to do,swap engines or rears because the 160 is hydro and and the 81 has that motor mount, will the mount unbolt leaving factory holes in frame for new engine? what i want is either a 16hp 8sp c-81 or a 16hp 8spd c-
josh416 2 #2 Posted March 15, 2010 if the c 160 is an hydro take the 16hp out and drop it in the c 81 there bassicly the same tractors the 16 hp shall bolt right in no problem cause 8 speeds are way better then hydro
ricksrj58 273 #3 Posted March 15, 2010 i was not sure if i would have to drill new holes or not because the 81 has the motor mount with rubber bushings
josh416 2 #4 Posted March 15, 2010 aahhh iso mounts what u gotta do is go under the frame and un bolt the cast mounts and take the whole iso mount set up out and that mean 16 should drop right in no holes drilled cause ive done it before easy swap

KeithB 6 #6 Posted March 15, 2010 make sure you use a 4" motor pully with the 8 speed tranny
jpmcleod 4 #7 Posted March 15, 2010 Picked up a C-81 yesterday with a belly scrape blade. Found it a couple of weeks ago and finally got it. It appears as though all the parts are intact. Just some surface rust that I have already been sprayed with rust nutralizer. I put a Kohler Magnum 12 on my Commando 8 and had to drill the two frame holes on the PTO side and raise the front of the hood a little to clear the fan shroud. You may have to do the same. Anyway, they look good with the bigger engines.

tarcoleo 119 #14 Posted March 15, 2010 I tell you, there's a lot of that going around. I have been selling a couple of 42" decks and had the experience in reverse, where folks said they would be coming and I made it a point to be home for them, only to be stood up. Grrrrr! Tom in RI PS-Two good souls did show up with cash and bought them.

jpmcleod 4 #16 Posted March 16, 2010 I would love to see a picture of the Onan on the C-81. That has to be a 18 hp twin. That would have to look "kool".

wheelhorsec85 5 #19 Posted March 17, 2010 i was not sure if i would have to drill new holes or not because the 81 has the motor mount with rubber bushings you do not have to drill any holes at all there already there just unbolt the cradle mount ib the back and take a hammer and hit each side on the front cradle mount till each end breaks off . it is easier this way becouse you cant get to the bolts unless you drop off the front end . call me if needed ive done this swap a few times # below jeff :omg:
