HL-5 Headlight measurements

Recommended Posts

Lane Ranger

If anyone has a HL-5 Headlight setup on their Wheel Horse I would appreciate some help on getting the dimensions of the u-shaped pipe/tubing that the headlights attach to.

I decided that I can make a couple sets for our Lawn Rangers by using conduit and steel plate. I have some chrome headlights that will work with no probelm to the tubing.

The location of the muffler/exhaust on the tractor suggest the length of the tubing and angle has to be under ten inches to avoid any problem being close to the heat of the muffler and exhaust pipe.

Any help with this information would be appreciated.

TT

The OEM HL-5 headlight bracket is solid round stock, not tubing, and is "stamped" flat at the mounting area.

I'm thinking the right side upright is slightly shorter than the left side, and (if I remember correctly) is not bent quite as tight (leans out a little more at the top) for exhaust clearance.

Correct TT. Although all originals I have vary from one to another (perhaps they were modified over the years to suit different tractors), one if needed can just bend one out slightly more if needed for clearance.Or just reduce the height on one leg.

What is the diameter of the round stock to make these?  1/2"?  3/4"?

5/8 solid stock fits in 1/2 emt conduit. You may have to ream tubing with a 5/8 drill bit or sand round stock for a slightly looser fit.

Thanks Hank.

I've got a pair of PMCO lights and NOS switch, just need to make the bracket.  Will pick up 2 foot of 5/8 stock.

What would the conduit be for?

If I can find the lights I'm looking for I am going to use tubing to run the wires through.

bringing this one back for some info.  What is the tap size needed for both holes the lights mount to?

      Hi all,

i bought this 1961 701 in fall of 2018 and restored it. I completed it in fall of 2019 and I wanted to show some pictures of before during and after I got it done. I did my research and tried to make this tractor as close to original as possible. The few exceptions are tires, wiring and the steering support. Not a perfect tractor but sure is nice enough for me.

Added the first replica HL-5 today on the 653, the first of a couple of dozen in the works. They are not connected yet, working on a bracket for switch.

Found these cheap lights on ebay that are virtually identical to the originals (except for quality of course) and less than $20.00 later including 1/2 rod here we have lights for another tractor.

I came across what I believe to be 60s headlights that were attached to the hood of a 1960 Suburban. The seller would not sell me the headlights separately so I bought the Suburban. The only identification on them is stencilled on the back. One headlight reads "PMCo 401" and the other reads "PMCo 402".
Can anyone shed some light on my purchase?
      Thanks,
      Dave
