hey yall i recently changed the belt on my 603 and now its a pain in the ass to get into gear, to put it in gear i gotta throw it in the first position then i have to take my foot off the clutch a litle then it eventually pops into gear i only have this problem gettin it into first gear could this be because the belt is to tight or is it something else because it never did this with the old belt and i dont want to mess up my gears?

TT

Seeing how this problem started with the installation of the new belt, I would start there. (instead of looking at the transaxle internals)

I'm guessing it still has the big Briggs engine, correct?

The original design of the belt guard, the guides bolted to the engine near the drive pulley, and the "finger" on the tensioner pulley - along with the proper length fabric-covered V belt - must all be in place and adjusted correctly.

If any of those things are missing, altered, or damaged, clutch operation is unpredictable and sometimes dangerous.

If the belt is not releasing at the engine pulley and continues to turn the transaxle input pulley with the pedal depressed, it will "grind" the gears and eventually wear them out or break something. (which you already know)

Got pictures?
