Tire chains

Recommended Posts

WH'ers:

I'm in the market for a set of chains for my 416, if I recall correctly the tire

size is 23-8.5-12. I'm looking locally (Craigslist etc.) because shipping on

these suckers is a lot, and I'm seeing some ads that give a length

and width rather than a tire size. I guess I could do a bit of geometry and

figure out the diameter of my tires, but because the chain does not run around

the outside diameter of the tire, I'd be guessing on what would actually fit.

Any advice from the sages on converting chain length to tire size fit?

Thanks,

Jeff in Ithaca, NY

I bought mine from an on-line vendor for I think something like $50 for my 416. Check your tire size, my 416 is 23-9.50-12, my 414 is 8.50's

I bought a set of 2-link chains from vulcantire.com after another forum member suggested this vendor. They were 52 bucks delivered, and included some tensioners. The ones at TSC were 4-link and were $58. My 416-8 is also a 23.00 x 9.50 x 12. The Vulcan chains look good and fit well. Fast delivery, too.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the advice, but I'm not sure I made myself clear. I'm looking for used

chains (i.e., cheap), but sometimes I see them advertised as the length of the

chain, not the size of the tire they fit. For example, the ad might say the chains

are 48" long and 12" wide. And the owner may not know what size tire they

came off. Is there any way I can translate sizes like that into a 23 x 8.5 x 12

tire? Or do I need to bring a tire along??

Brian (BuckRancher): I'm hoping to get out to Mazourek Farms in the next

couple of weeks and get all the goodies for the engine. (Work has a way of

getting in my way.) I'm hoping you are still game!
