c-125 8 speed

I was considering putting hydraulic lift cylinder on my c-125 8 speed.

I was wondering about using a car power steering pump for the

hydraulic pump. Anyone have any ideas if this would work ok? I

have a flywheel pully like you would use for a starter generator on

the older models. I thought I could use it to drive the pwr str pump

I'm going to put the electric lift I just got on my 414 8 speed.Just trying

to find the bracket that mounts to frame for the lift actuator to fasten to.

How about selling your C125 or trading for a hydro tractor with hyd lift,Rick

Rick, I bought this c-125 8 speed brand new in 1982. I'm just

kind of partial to this tractor. Even though I have had to repaint it

and have rebuilt the motor, it still looks great and runs great. I have

tractor tread rears, also redesigned the aircleaner so it sits above

hood, and also put a tractor upright muffler on it. I primarily use this

tractor for my garden and other misc chores. I use my 414 8 speed

with 48" mower for mowing. The moldboard plow and tiller are just

kind of heavy. Thought I might make it a little easier to lift. I need to

get a digital camera so can post a few picks. :party:

Boatman, I am trying to do the same on my C-165. I don't think that a power steering pump would have enough pressure. I don't know that for sure, but I can buy a 2200 psi pump with bypass and 4 ports from Northern here in Mn. for 99.00. I would like to use a 520 cylinder for the lift( I just happen to have one) but the pump and valve and hoses will probably cost around 200.00. And then to make the mounts. Then some sort of reservoir too. What type P.S. pump are you thinking about? separate tank or complete. To me, I don't think the ones like Ford or Chevy have would hold enough fluid. But maybe like Volvo or some of the Toronados with a separate pump and tank might. Just getting a pulley with right shiv might be tough to get on those.. Just a thought. Pat

I don't think that a power steering pump would have enough pressure.

I assure you, most of them will be more than enough.

FELs use an external pump because of the sheer volume of fluid required to raise those longer cylinders. The standard hydraulic lift on the rest of the Wheel Horse equipment uses about 750 PSI, and that is more than enough for even the larger "D series" tractor cylinders. But, the OEM cylinders are very small. It doesn't take much fluid to actuate them.

I've used a tractor with a steering pump for hydraulics, and it will pick up the heaviest implements I have much faster and easier than the OEM hydraulics. There is really no comparison. With a heavy rear-mounted tiller (one that has it's own engine), the front wheels will leave the ground if I lift it too quickly. It seems sometimes the tractor will flip over if I'm not careful with it. The lift is VERY strong.

That is good news to hear. Being as my electric WH actuator that I

bought last week off of Ebay came today and doesn't work well. It goes

pretty good one direction but hardly goes the other and acts like it

pulls alot more juice in that direction. TRying to get hold of PO to

see about returning it. Anyway, being as these are not available from

wheel horse anymore, I think I've made up my mind to go power steering

pump with it's own resevoir. THe wheelhorse cylinder is so small that there

shouldn't be a problem not having enough fluid.Also once the cylinder and

lines are full the level shouldn't change. These are 2 way cylinders and

what oil goes in one end ,the same should go out the other end.Also you

can still get parts to fix these cylnders or find one pretty easy yet.I don't

know if I should use a small oil cooler with it or not? :party:

Boatman you have touched on this same subject in a couple differant threads here at RS now.

In this thread is a pic of my 416 with an electric over hydraulic setup for lift.

You can see it in the pic behind the engine=ahead of the sheet metal.

Give it a read...it may give you some ideas.
