4hp Kohlers, either a K90 or K91 were the common engine. Some had a Clinton I believe.

Fenders and toolbox were an option. The fenders were smooth (no ribs in them), different than what was used on most of the early 60's tractors.

The serial tag was a stcker on the left front of the frame:

A lot of them have lost it by now

1. A Suburban isn't an RJ.

2. Transmission were not the same. The RJ had a 5003 and the Suburbans a 5010.

UPDATE: Someone beat me to it. Damn!

The fenders were optional, but not to many people bought the fenders for the rj-58/or the rj-59 back then.....the fastest way i can tell an rj from a suburban is the throttle location....i'm not sure what you have with-out seeing a picture...

i just see alot of people who mistake the 1960 suburan from an rj-58/rj-59

but if you have either one they are both very nice tractors. B)

Chris,

I got my belt guard from Dave's Tractor World. May not hurt to call them and let them know you are looking for one. If they don't have one ask them to keep you posted when they get one!! Dave and Phil are very good to deal with!!! They are a vendor on the site and their info is in the vendor section!

Good Luck and get plenty of pics!!!

I have gotten good at spotting a RJ from a Suburban just with a quick glance at the front end..The overall outline is quite similar, but there are some very noticeable differences once you know what to look for..

photos from other threads here on redsquare:

1958 RJ58:

Two major spotting features..(I know there are more differences! these are just the two I can use to tell them apart at a glance)

RJ:

1. The hood is completely smooth, no ridges or lines.

2. The front axle "beam" is straight across.

(sorry..I dont know the correct term for that part..the piece that runs between the two front wheels)

1960 Suburban:

003.jpg

Suburban:

1. The hood has distinct stylized ridges, its not totally smooth like the RJ.

2. The front axle "beam" curls up at the ends, its not straight across like the RJ.

those are a few things I have picked up on! B)
