fireman 1,021 #28 Posted May 11, 2010 Well winters over and time to start the transplant! Made some room in the workshop and pulled in the C-81. I am fully documenting the tear down and transplant with pictures and written notes. I will post them here as I go so if anyone has the urge to do this, they can use the thread as a guide. Here are a few of the first pictures. They are just over all photos showing the location of everything before I remove the motor. I hope to have it out tomorrow and have the Onan set in place to check the fit. I'm pretty sure that I will have to cut the hood to accommodate the air cleaner and dipstick. Should look bad-a$$ with a chrome air-cleaner coming through the hood like an old muscle car
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,332 #29 Posted May 11, 2010 Jeff, Glade to see you are moving forward with this project. It should be a very nice and unique machine when it is done. If you need help, let me know. I owe you more than one !! While you are at it pull the tins and get them sandblasted so we can paint them.
papaglide 542 #30 Posted May 11, 2010 Could you please tell me where you got your seat. I would like to have one with armrests on my GT-14 but haven't found one.
fireman 1,021 #31 Posted May 11, 2010 Got it off of Ebay.
fireman 1,021 #32 Posted May 11, 2010 Removed the original Kohler and labeled the harness still in the tractor. Took off the 8hp motor mounts and cleaned up the frame rails so I could get the Onan engine mount plate and engine set in to check all the clearances. The 20hp fits on the frame perfectly. The hood will also hit the exhaust so the right side will have to be notched to accommodate it. I have to work my shift tomorrow so when I get home Thursday morning I will mark the hood and get that modified. Then I will move on to the PTO and drive belt. I want to get the belt in place and modify the right side belt cover as needed because it looks like the crankshaft is a little higher with the Onan in place. Here are some pictures of the transplant:
Raider12 13 #33 Posted May 11, 2010 This is going to be one "Bad" little tractor when your finished. Nice pics to. Thanks for sharing. I look forward to seeing more. :D
Don1977 604 #34 Posted May 11, 2010 Why don't you modify the exhaust, extend it out and don't cut the hood. It look like you have enough room.
rickv1957 72 #35 Posted May 11, 2010 That Onan is looking good on there! Rick
SALTYWRIGHT 859 #36 Posted May 11, 2010 HI.......IT LOOKS LIKE A NICE JOB SO FAR. IF THERE IS ANY THING I CAN DO TO HELP PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I AM AROUD ALL DAY IN THE WEEK. RUSS :D
fireman 1,021 #37 Posted May 19, 2010 Finally got to do a little more work on it. I removed the foot rests, belt guard, and lower panel on the opposite side so I could swap out the original pedals for the nicer ones from the 417. While the parts are off they have been sanded, primed and painted. The whole tractor will eventually get repainted as I go along and other parts are removed. The exhaust has been removed so the hood will now close. The air cleaner and dip stick fit under it with no modification needed. I will modify the muffler so it clears the lip of the hood. With the miracle of the laser printer, I "Modified" the hood decal so I can see what it looks like with the "C-200" on it. You can see it in these next pictures. Once the hood is repainted, I will have Terry make me up some new decals for it.

Duff 206 #40 Posted May 19, 2010 Jeff, that's a really sharp project you've got going there! Duff :D
fireman 1,021 #41 Posted May 19, 2010 I was actually able to work on it some more this morning. Removed the hood, seat and fender. Got the fender sanded and in primer. I removed the head lights and all the decals from the hood then I ran out of time. I am going to take it with me to work tomorrow and hopefully get it at least sanded and primered. I wasn't sure which tractor I was going to bring to the show but since I am making serious headway, I think it might just be this one. At least it will be a "one of a kind" . Raider12 13 #42 Posted May 19, 2010 With the Onan stuffed in there it reminds me of a Chevy 454 shoe horned into a Vega! That is soooo cool.. :D
MikesRJ 552 #43 Posted May 19, 2010 So Jeff, you decided not to cut that hood. I hope you're re-routing the exhaust plumbing.
rickv1957 72 #44 Posted May 19, 2010 Jeff, looks great, lotsa motor! Rick
fireman 1,021 #45 Posted May 19, 2010 Yeah Mike I decided to not cut the hood since the dip stick and air cleaner fit under it. The original muffler from the Onan is shot but the pipes that lead to it from the motor are good. So I am going to cut them off from the muffler and lengthen them then I will figure it from there. fireman 1,021 #46 Posted June 4, 2010 Finally got to spend some more time working on this project. Removed the loader and all the sheet metal. The tins have all been sanded, primed and repainted. The rolling chassis has been power washed and de-greased. I used an abrasive sanding wheel to remove anything else that was left over. The chassis has a first coat of primer on all the metal that I used the wheel on. I still need to pull the rims and tires and clean and primer the hubs and front end. I hope to have the top coat on by the end of next week.

fireman 1,021 #50 Posted June 6, 2010 Wow, It's amazing how much time I have been able to put into this in the last few days! Kids had camp outs and play dates so I was able to get a lot more done. Since these pics were taken, the front end has been pulled off, stripped, sanded and primed. I think I should be able to get it completely back together minus the engine by Tuesday at this rate
