truckin88 104 #1 Posted February 10, 2010 All, Here is the 310-8 I got in on trade from SteveBo's dad Jim, as partial trade for the C-175 I had gotten from Steve. We all have our favorite horses, mine are 300-400 maroon stripe 8 spds with kohler singles. This was just a sweet machine, right off the trailer, she was a nice runner. I decided right away that it was a keeper and would be a quality build. I replaced the air and fuel filters with OEM Kohler filters. I used sythetic oil in the motor (10W-30 for winter) and rear end (85-140). I took off the stupid rear reflectors, and wired in some LED rear tails. replaced the broken headlight bezels. New Platinum plug. Greased everything, including pto bearing. The tires were replaced with Duro 23x8.50-12 ags in the back (4ply). And Carlisle ribs 15x6-6 (4ply) on the front, I always like the look of the multi ribs on the workhorses and cases. Next year I will get an extra set of the small rims for the front and run some tri ribs in winter (I heard they rip lawns in spring/summer). When I tried to upgrade the front spindles and rims, I ran into issues getting them so I decided to keep the smaller tires incase I get a 37 and bagger. The rear weights were from my C-100 that I sold, I painted them and put them on, a nice cast iron weights from a case. Here are pics...ready for tomorrow:

truckin88 104 #3 Posted February 10, 2010 Will, That was my FIRST wheelhorse then it went to my brother and then dad and now you !! I agree that one is a keeper. Ags look good but I would still upgrade the fronts to 8's .... Steve in person these tires look awesome on the front, plus to other factors: -If I get a 37" deck it could rub. -If I run tri ribs next winter 6" tri ribs are about $40 a pair and work oon the same principal as 8", suppose to be great in snow and ice. Firestone is the only company that makes tri ribs is 6.50-8 they are $140 a pair plus shipping, that is some crazy loot to spend for a seasonal tire. It is in good hands, let me know when you want to stop by for the original tires, they are here for you.

JoeMonag 1 #6 Posted February 10, 2010 Will, good luck with the 310-8, I have had my 88 310-8 for al most 3 years, it is very dependable, and has very little to go wrong with it. I just installed a two stage snow thrower on it, I'll try it for the first time on Wed. In the spring I install a Johnny Bucket Jr. I have a 42" dozer blade for it (from my old 73 8hp 4speed) and I have a belt driven 2.4 kw generator for it also. Thanks Ken, The 120 has over 2000 hours on it, it has been in my wifes family since new...my Father in law figured it out at about 2400, starts and runs great, though it could use a head gasket, which I have, just need time to fix, if I do a total restore it will get a full tear down and rebuild, it is hard when that is your worker. JoeMonag 1 #19 Posted February 14, 2010 Will, what are the advantages of using syn. oil and a platnum spark plug ? I may want to try on my 310-8 Kohler Magnum. Joe in Norton

rick 233 #21 Posted February 14, 2010 Keep in mind the H10 spark plug has a longer reach than the J19 type, so be sure the threads are the same length on the replacement plug. I have seen small engines loose power using the wrong type plug. I have used the Briggs/Champion platinum plug in my Briggs engines, but really couldn't tell the difference. I tend to use NGK plugs, where there is a direct cross match.
jimbotelho 1 #22 Posted February 14, 2010 Will looks great !! just wondering why you did not go with 950or 1050 rear tires You were right in saying it was in great shape afterall steve bo learned from "hiold man" not everything though. looks good enjoy it I can" wait till grass cutting the 175 is already!! truckin88 104 #23 Posted February 14, 2010 the plug in there was the wrong champion....I usually use H10C, autolite 216's and 4316's which are direct cross matches, aulolite makes a platinum version of those avail at advanced ap. The problem I had with the original plug was it was gapped to .40, so replaced with the platinum gapped to .25 runs real nice. Platinum because they are suppose to last longer Synthetic oil because it has a better cleaning ability and does not break down as fast (I still however change at normal intervals) Jim, thanks, the wider tires would have looked off on those rims and with the small fronts. Also wider tires tend to float on snow and loose dirt, while narrow cuts, which is what I was looking for. 8.50 just fit.
Carlsbarn 0 #24 Posted February 16, 2010 I bought my 310-8 in 1986 new.Still starts first time I hit the key and no smoke.Only thing I changed is oil.plug and 1 drive belt which I could have left alone.
