forphase1 5 #1 Posted February 5, 2010 Hullo again. Quick question this time. What transmission oil filter do I need? According to my parts catalog, it is part number 102819. I found an article that I'll copy/paste in a sec, but according to it, my options are to get the Toro #79-5270, or a Napa 1410. Is this accurate, and are there other viable options? Right now it appears that there is a Fram filter on it. Thanks in advance! Transmission oil filter The first WH filter was #5990 from 1965-72. This was replaced by WH #102819 1973-80. This was replaced by WH #108335 1980-92. This was replaced by Toro #79-5270 1992-on. If you go to Wix the only filter that is a direct replacement without a bypass valve is 108335 = Wix 51410 = Napa 1410. If you have a filter without an internal bypass on the transmission and it plugs up or becomes restricted the operator will notice the reduced performance. Change filter and away you go again. If you have a filter with an internal bypass on the transmission and it plugs up, the bypass opens and allows the dirt and oil to continue on into the pump potentially damaging it. The operator will notice the reduced performance and repair or replace transmission and go again. WH 5990 = Wix 51307 for direct replacement with bypass WH 102819 = Wix 51521 for direct replacement with bypass WH 108335 = Wix 51410 for direct replacement without bypass Toro 79-5270 = Wix 51521 for direct replacement with bypass I would definitely use the Wix 51410 or Napa 1410 for all the hydro transmissions. nylyon-(Admin) 7,254 #2 Posted February 5, 2010 Most members here (including me) will tell you to get the Toro (Wheel Horse) part. If you decide to go an alternate path, just be sure that the filter you choose does not have an internal bypass valve and you should be good.
truckin88 104 #3 Posted February 5, 2010 I have used them all....stay away from Stens....the WH/toro is good, WIX/NAPA GOLD is good too...their casing is just better made...I have used the fram 2844 which is also not bad, but half the price of the WIX/Napa. I had read somewhere that wix made them for toro.
