truckin88 104 #1 Posted February 4, 2010 There is currently a thread around MTF about speeding a WH 8speed up with smaller pulley/smaller belt on the trans, somewhat like you see with superchargers and underdrive pulleys on hot rods. Would this hurt anything?
Horse Fanatic 49 #2 Posted February 4, 2010 I have an 8 speed with a larger (Hydro) drive pulley on the engine. It goes faster, I mostly wanted it to go faster in reverse. No problems except for finding just the right belt.
Duff 206 #3 Posted February 4, 2010 Can't see where it would hurt anything as long as you properly match the drive belt to the new set-up so the clutch works properly. You might have to modify the belt guard(s) as well. Might limit some of your options in terms of slow ground speed attachments, though. Duff B)
Coadster32 793 #4 Posted February 4, 2010 I beleive that it's all a compromise. If you have enough power to give up to get ground speed, go for it. You can always put the old pullys and belt back on. I sped up my 854 a bit, and I love it. Plenty of power to spare. I did this with an older craftsman 10hp tractor (with duel stacks), no sweat. I'd pop serious wheelies with it, and never had a problem. (exept the flat spot on my head )
rickv1957 72 #5 Posted February 5, 2010 A smaller trans pulley will add more speed if needed also,Rick
jusjeepn 59 #6 Posted February 5, 2010 This set up should speed mine up x6
rickv1957 72 #7 Posted February 5, 2010 Pat,that pulley will make top speed at what,20 mph?,Rick
jusjeepn 59 #8 Posted February 5, 2010 Increased engine drive pulley to 5", decreased trans drive pulley to 1.5 ", increased tire size to 24". Should do 32-37mph at WOT, as long as the belt doesn't slip to much on the trans pulley.
rickv1957 72 #9 Posted February 6, 2010 37 mph,Wow, Rick
jusjeepn 59 #10 Posted February 6, 2010 Testing will not begin until the disc brake system is hashed out. W/H brakes just won't cut it! B)

Uses them as turning brakes in the garden. On blacktop they will lock up and slide the tires Pretty easy to do Duane

tarcoleo 119 #18 Posted February 8, 2010 "LOL, and here I want to slow mine down so high range second gear is comfortable on my rough "lawn" which was pasture in 1975 when we had our house built !" ------------------------------------- Rick- Had that "comfort problem" 'til I swapped the original seat in favor of an implement seat with a LOT of springy travel. That dampened out the bumps and grinds on the spinal column so that the ride feels like that of a baby buggy. Tom in RI B)
Stress Test Pullin 0 #19 Posted February 8, 2010 just found this thread, on the puller, with the bigger tires on it, a 5" pulley and a inch bigger belt seamed to have a decent cruising speed, but that again was with the 26" tall tires
baerpath 517 #20 Posted February 8, 2010 Thanks Duane! What's a cub? A little bear, maybe? Duff A little yellow one The ones he used were from a 149 Cub Cadet, the pedals from a VW bug Works slick for non hyd brakes. If you want all out use a set for a mini dragster On the pulley swap I use this to help figure http://www.csgnetwork.com/pulleybeltcalc.html Duane
Pirate 0 #21 Posted March 27, 2010 This set up should speed mine up x6 Just wondering. I think you got the idlers on the drive side of the belt.
jusjeepn 59 #22 Posted March 27, 2010 This was a full custom unit. If you notice, the frame of the tractor is below the drive pulley for the trans. The "idler" pulley is strictly for belt routing for the modified belt guard. The tensioning pulley also rides on the "drive" side of the belt which will not affect function whatsoever. This tractor has since been sold to a member here who will be completing it but not with the pulley sizes shown.
