Shuboxlover 479 #1 Posted February 1, 2010 Didn't know if I should post this in here, or in the engines...move it if you need to. Are electric clutches a good idea? Meaning.....should I replace my manual one with an electric one. What are the advantages/disadvantages with them? What all would I need to convert from a manual to an electric? Thanks
rickv1957 73 #2 Posted February 1, 2010 Electric clutch is a nice option, but expensive, the manual will get the job done,Rick
Save Old Iron 1,568 #3 Posted February 1, 2010 I guess an awful lot of what YOU THINK comes into play here. If your are physically challenged and have a difficult time engaging the clutch lever on a manual setup - flipping a switch is a great option. The down side is the expense of acquiring the clutch and the expense of replacing it when it fails. Pick your poison.
Operator 7 #4 Posted February 1, 2010 Great time to ask this question Shubox, I have been wondering that too! My [new to me] D-200 has different mufflers and the PO took the linkage for pto off. so now I have to decide "different mufflers or stack them" or "electric PTO" well I bought a new electric one off the "E" good deal less than half price. Just haven't put it on - yet. Randy
pfrederi 18,329 #5 Posted February 1, 2010 I had to put an electric PTO on my C-175 as the replacement KT-17 I put on came from a JD and didn't have ball bearing on the crank to handle the end loading from a manual PTO. I used it one winter on the blower and every time I flipped the switch I cringed as it engaged so hard and so fast...not good on cold equipment that could be iced up. Worst that can happen to a manual PTO is the friction disk wears out or the bearing dies...$40 bucks for replacement parts is a lot cheaper than 75-100 for a used electric one that may or may not be in good shape..... Where the manual kicks on "softer" doesn't take a whole lot of effort & is tons cheaper to maintane/replace. Randy I believe the D's used there own version of an E clutch & the C/300/400 series type may not interchange....I may be wrong here.
