Throwing one together from parts

Recommended Posts

Rollerman

Started looking at some of my inventory laying around the shop.

Well more like got tired of tripping over all these parts laying around so I started to assemble a tractor.

Everyone has the favorite style of Horse...mine are the post 65 short frames & especially the 1965 models with the Kohler K241 10HP engines in them.

Last fall Jim M & I drove down to the Wapakoneta,OH swap meet to try & sell some of our stuff.

We both did pretty decent & even brought back more than we took, but Jim didn't have any luck selling this lump of parts.

When we got back to his place to unload his stuff he pulled his very best salesman routine & talked me into buying them rather him unloading them.....pretty slick of him huh?

So I'm out in the shop a few nights ago & realized I had everything to put this one together...engine from a 1075, nice 6 speed 10 pinion rear trans, strait hood "but pitted", a two spoke steering wheel, throttle & choke cables.

I'll have to fab up a belt guard & figure I can copy the one off my 1055.

Since this is almost the same tractor in parts & apperance to my 1055 (which is a 1965 short frame 3 speed 10HP) I'll call this one a 1065 since it will have a 6 speed.

Future plans include a 520H front axle, easy steer setup if I can find one :banghead: , a hefty counterweight & I'll put my loader on this one rather than tearing up my cherry 85 416 8speed.

Pics.....

Looks good Stephen! Love the fat wheels too. It will look awesome with the loader on it.

You didn't realize that Jim had that plan going all along?

Ya gotta love the "factory looking" bastard tractors, I put together a "B-160" to run my blower, and I love it. The maneuverability of a medium frame, with the grunt of a big tractor. It needs more weight on the rear, but I have a cunning plan for that, and when it warms up it'll get an 8 speed too.

Hey Stephen, I like it, not looking bad at all. Would like to see it when you get it finished. Do you still have your other loader on the 855? I have one for my GT14 now. It's gonna be the next project. See Ya, Bye Burly

John I still have the 855 that Bob Rock painted & built an FEL for...it's mostly eye candy.

I don't use it as a working tractor & try to keep it clean & away from Taylor.

This one won't be very pretty, I'm going for function over looks.

Hey Stephen,

How about educating those of us that have never had a big block / small frame tractor as to how they get the motor under the hood!

Its a special block isnt it? and some pictures of the oil pan would be great. Otherwise the bits are all the same as the small block tractors?

Mike I'll get some pics around possibly tomorrow showing some of the differances.

But the block & oil pan are differant being almost flat at the bottom of the engine block with a very shallow oil pan.

I know they were used on the 1045, 1055, & 1075 bolted directly to the frame.

The hood would clear on the short frames but a unigue belt guard had to be used since the big blocks set off the frame to the PTO side another half inch or so.

Also the notch in the fender pan had to be wider to accomadate the wider beltguard

Some of the long frames used variations of the shallow oil pan Kohlers too like the 1046, SK486 & I believe the rubber mounted engines in the 2nd & 3rd generation C's

Little more progress on my 1065 project.

Modified an old rusty 753 beltguard to accomadate the off set big block engine & notched the fender around the now wider beltguard.

Also went through the engine put the steering shaft & wheel in place.

Still need to wire it, install the 520 forward swept axle, put the mid brackets on it & start trial fitting the FEL sub frame on it.

Very dissapointed with this new "better" cell phone camera.

Supposed to be 4.0 megs & takes worse pics than my old camera phone with the 1.0 meg camera.

Maybe better start useing my wifes digital camera....wish it wasn't pink though.

Duro 23x10.50's

There just on there now for rollers, I have a set of Carlisle tires similiar to whats used on the JD Gators that I'll be running on this one.

The Duro's are great, but for a loader tractor with a heavy counterweight they feel a little to squishy.

The Carlisle are a little more stout in the sidewalls.
