Tutorial - Troubleshooting by Multimeter

Recommended Posts

Save Old Iron

Go for it I have the strt gens and clutches along with a Onan giving me fits in its electrical sytem

Duane

Duane,

fire up the kerosene heater and I have no problem coming over to help out with the Onan electrical.

The 520H I have in the basement right now is a wonderland of examples of what corrosion and time can do to electronics. It could be the basis for a whole chapter in a fixit book!

Let me know with a PM what's up as far as electrical issues and we will work something out.

And thanks for the experience rewiring the older stuff. Be happy to help out over the summer months - but before the skeeters start to bite!

I'm in !

If you need any '74 and older pics I can help. Re-wired more than my fair share of these things including the brother-in-law's Charger which was a total basket case.

There are some parts headed your way via USPS, btw....

Sarge

Sarge,

thanks for the heads up.

We can certainly make use of these defective starter / gen regulators in a troubleshooting tutorial.

Either way, fixable or not, I will return them when finished.

Right now I'll try to build a test fixture so we might be able to get a handle on fixing the regulators for other members. The higher quality original parts are getting harder to find every day.

Excellent idea.

I would be happy to assist in any way I can. I write manuals and such so I know how to write as well as to make illustrations.

Just let me know if I can help.

I do have a suggestion: How about doing a "101" course first. This would cover troubleshooting with a test lamp. Also could cover Ohm law in this one.

I guess I have heard about the penny in the fuse box but never tinfoil in the fuse holder.

I would love to see a picture of this one !

Rolf,

sounds like good idea. I have really never been a big fan of the test lite for gaining an UNDERSTANDING of how something works. For quick troubleshooting where I did not want to take my multimeter out in the rain or the snow - fine - but that's just for a quick fix.

A "How To" for the test lite sounds like a great idea too, but strays away from the "How to use a Multimeter" subject matter I propose to create.

I would encourage you to create the tutorial in addition to what I have proposed. The test lite can certainly rough out a problem quickly when used properly.

I could certainly use all the help I can get. We will keep in touch and I would love to hear ideas on how to present this information.

Looking back on this post - nearing 3000 views in 3 days makes we think this is a no brainer - there is plenty of interest in this aspect of the hobby.

Now all we have to do is figure of the most EFFECTIVE way to deliver the information and training.

I feel another poll coming up but I am not sure of the questions yet.

My brain hurts right now - more to come later today

Oh! BTW, In fooling with all sorts of old cars through the years I've seen dozens of fuses wrapped in foil, cigarette pack lining, chewing gum wrappers, etc. to get a car back in service. Even a couple of cut to length nails.

What a Joule

here is another joule ...

An opthamologist, a priest, and an electronics engineer were golfing when they came upon a VERY slow foursome ahead of them. The trio soon became frustrated and called the marshall over, asking him what was up with the foursome who were playing like blind men and taking so much time.

The marshall replied, "They ARE blind men. Those are four firefighters who recently lost their sight when the clubhouse caught fire...they saved numerous women and children from a horrible death, but all lost their sight. As a gesture of thanks, the club has given them free golf any time they want."

The opthamologist exclaimed, "How selfless! I will treat each and every one for free, perhaps I can restore their vision!"

The priest exclaimed, "How righteous those four are! I will dedicate a sermon in their honor and ask the congregation to pray for them!"

The electronics engineer asked, "Why don't they play at night?"

Well folks,

It's official - with nearly 5000 reads in 5 +days,

I would say the interest level is obviously high and I will need to speak with the Mod's to see the best way we can structure the tutorials and the comment area for the tutorials.

Stay tuned folks - and thanks to all those who have offered support, parts and pics.

The next week or so will be personally "busy" for me. Hang tight - we may need a chat session or two to come up with some ideas on format for the tutorials and which tutorials would be best to start with.

Any comments are welcome.

Tinfoil nuttin, We use a .22 shell in place of a small glass fuse!

It's more fun if it's unfired.

Kinda redefines "Blowing a fuse" don't it.
