We use the kohler 18hp cam in several of our 12 to14 horse

flat head kohlers with good success it produces a better

torque curve and your engine will pull longer on the governer

In my opinion its well worth the price for a drop in part

any thoughts-opinions anybody :banghead:

They're no longer available new, were way too much money for the little bit of difference they make, and good old eBay drove the price of the used ones up so high that you'd be crazy to think about buying one off there.

You asked for opinions, right?

Most cam people in the garden tractor pulling biz have cams that will pass a "stock" inspection and can be had for just over $100. They also claim to make more power than the K-361 cam does.

While it may pass for stock, is it really? The K-361 cams are, kinda sorta.......

That's the "catch" to the K-361 camshaft..... it's an OEM part with a factory grind, so it's usually "legal" in the stock class.

Brian Miller offers cam grinds on stock 10-16hp cams to 18hp specs for $125.

If you want the better than 18hp cam grind contact Vogel Manufacturing. $168

Lakota has a "better than 18hp cam" cam for $135.

There are literally dozens of places to get them......

Regardless, many clubs are starting to outlaw the 18hp cams. While technically an OEM item, they aren't stock to the engines they are putting them in.

Ok--say everything is left bone stock on a K341 and you put in the magic 18hp Cam---how much power are you going to gain without the extra displacement or overhead valves??? Or are people just trying to shift the power curve around to a more favorable setup?

The K-361 cam in a K-341 won't give you more than 1 or 2 additional horsepower, even with other modifications. It will give you considerably more low end torque though.
