Hi,

I have a 1960 511 we are in the process of restoring. We want to chage the oil in the transmission and want to make sure we don't put too much / little in.Can anyone please tell me how much.

Also I have read 30 weight oil to gear oil on this site, what do you recommend. This will probably not see to muchcold weather work.

Thanks in advance for your response

Capacity is one and one half quarts.

You will likely get other answers, but Wheel Horse recommends using SAE 90-140 A.P.I. Service GL-5 gear lube.

Lighter weight gear lubes will work, as long as they are GL-5 rated.

Engine oil is NOT a good idea as it will squeeze out from between the gear teeth and allow metal to metal contact. It will also offer next to no protection to the bronze axle bearings.

Confusing. :thumbs:

A 511 doesn't exist and a 551 is a 1961 - not a 1960.

If it's a 551, it has the two piece Uni-Drive. A 550 would have the three piece Uni-Drive.

So what do you actually have? :banghead:

It has to be one or the other - but not both.

1960 = 550

1961 = 551

Have any pictures? :thumbs:

But the hydros have gears in the rear end and they use 10w30 or 10w 40 motor oil....

1960 = 550

1961 = 551

:banghead: Good catch TT! Again :thumbs:

I gotta admit that I DID see this, but forgot about it within the time it took to look up the capacity. :WRS:

Either way, both the 550 and 551 use the same lube in the same amount.
