tommybro 1 #1 Posted January 25, 2010 Hi, I have a 1960 511 we are in the process of restoring. We want to chage the oil in the transmission and want to make sure we don't put too much / little in.Can anyone please tell me how much. Also I have read 30 weight oil to gear oil on this site, what do you recommend. This will probably not see to muchcold weather work. Thanks in advance for your response
linen beige 14 #2 Posted January 25, 2010 Capacity is one and one half quarts. You will likely get other answers, but Wheel Horse recommends using SAE 90-140 A.P.I. Service GL-5 gear lube. Lighter weight gear lubes will work, as long as they are GL-5 rated. Engine oil is NOT a good idea as it will squeeze out from between the gear teeth and allow metal to metal contact. It will also offer next to no protection to the bronze axle bearings.
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #3 Posted January 25, 2010 Confusing. A 511 doesn't exist and a 551 is a 1961 - not a 1960. If it's a 551, it has the two piece Uni-Drive. A 550 would have the three piece Uni-Drive. So what do you actually have? :banghead:
tommybro 1 #4 Posted January 25, 2010 Crap, I should have proof read that, sorry I was told it's a 1960
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #5 Posted January 25, 2010 I was told it's a 1960 551 It has to be one or the other - but not both. 1960 = 550 1961 = 551 Have any pictures?

pfrederi 17,644 #8 Posted January 26, 2010 Engine oil is NOT a good idea as it will squeeze out from between the gear teeth and allow metal to metal contact. It will also offer next to no protection to the bronze axle bearings. But the hydros have gears in the rear end and they use 10w30 or 10w 40 motor oil.... linen beige 14 #9 Posted January 26, 2010 1960 = 550 1961 = 551 Good catch TT! Again I gotta admit that I DID see this, but forgot about it within the time it took to look up the capacity. Either way, both the 550 and 551 use the same lube in the same amount.
