dunk50 6 #1 Posted January 24, 2010 Seriously, I was thinking of putting a 12HP Kohler in a 418-A with a blown motor. At least temporarily while trying to build or find and AFFORDABLE 18-20 hp kohler. I know the power would not be the same but I a see a lot of 12HP rigs with blade or small blower or a 42" deck. Not looking to restore it, just use it. Anyone done this????
Don1977 604 #2 Posted January 24, 2010 Sounds like a plan to me. Then you could use it and it not be something just taking up space.

Sparky-(Admin) 21,300 #4 Posted January 24, 2010 It'll work just fine. There are plenty of WH's with 12hp or smaller motors and a hydro setup. I had a C-125 auto, which is a Kohler 12hp and an Eaton 1100 tranny and it was fine. Thats what you will end up with after the swap. I used a 42" deck with no issues and a 42" snow-chucker with no problems. Mike.........
Kelly 1,029 #5 Posted January 24, 2010 The engine if from a WH will bolt right in,even if it's a shaker mount engine you just need all the mounts, the holes should all be in the frame, the wiring will need a little work, but not to much, not sure on the charging part, I belive you have a onan 18hp correct? I think it's charging system is all self contained on the engine so you will have to wire a regulator up, even if it's a kohler twin, most of them have the charging system on them, you will need to pull the mounting plate with the engine it will not be needed, again if the 12hp spec's as or like a WH engine you will need to swap the engine drive pulley from one to the other, to mount the PTO you may need a few extra brackets, depending on the style of engine/oil pan, the PTO it's self will fit. I'm sure I missed something, but that is the basic's.
Dresden Guy 24 #6 Posted January 24, 2010 I just saw an 18 hp Kohler Magnum listed on Ebay (Listing #190366571625). The price presently is $76.00 with no Reserve. Maybe this could fit your 418??? Dresden Guy (Steve M in Ohio)
Rollerman 290 #7 Posted January 24, 2010 Paul for what it's worth a friend of mine bought a 418C non runner a few years back & put a K301 Kohler 12HP in it. It's his favorite tractor now & uses it for mowing & plowing.
dunk50 6 #8 Posted January 25, 2010 Thanks all and stephan. I want to play with the hole in the block 18hp but am on the hunt for a decent motor cheap. have a line on a tired 12hp that smokes but maybe if i get the 312-8 running and it's as good as I am told I may put it in the 418. jpmcleod 4 #9 Posted January 25, 2010 I just put a Kohler 12 Magnum in a Commando and it has mucho power. My 312-8 also has the same engine. The only difference on the Commando is that the 8hp has a smaller oil pan. The magnum oil pan is longer requiring drilling holes in the frame for the back two bolts.
