312-8 engine swap

Recommended Posts

Smike740

Hello,

I joined this forum a few weeks ago when I started looking into putting some bigger tires and rims on my 312-8. I am considering swapping a bigger engine into this tractor. I found a Kohler twin cylinder 18HP out of a C195 for sale locally that I may be interested in . Does anyone have experience with this engine swap? I don't want to modify any of the stock sheetmetal, any ideas if the engine will fit?

Thanks,

Mike

That one is newer than any that I have. Look at the parts diagrams for both tractors. I'm sure it will work, but you may have to get some additional parts.

Oh yea when you start :banghead::WRS::lol: :wwp:

18hp twin on a C-195? I take it that it already had an engine swap? (it should be a KT19 if original)

It's really no different than what Wheel Horse did when they built the 418 models and should be a relatively easy swap - if you have all of the parts.

I'm not sure on the size of the PTO end of the crankshaft, so installing your drive pulley and PTO clutch assembly might be the only issue. If you're lucky, it will be 1 1/8" too.

Hello,

Thanks for all the replies, I took a look at the parts diagram for a 418 and it looks like the engine I'am interested will drop right in size wise. I got some more info from the seller regarding the output shaft, it's 1 inch in diameter and he doesn't have the pulley/pto from the tractor it was on.

Also from the above comments the engine probably wasn't original and the seller doesn't know much about the setup. The seller bought the C-195 as a project tractor but decided to part it out instead.

Will I have any problems finding the pulley/ PTO for this size shaft? Maybe I shoul just stick with swapping in a K341 instead.

Thanks,

Mike

The "small block" Kohler singles used a 1" engine pulley and PTO. You should be able to find one from a B-80 or similar that would work.
