Iggy68 28 #1 Posted January 16, 2010 I am filling up the fluids in my 953, finally to that point. The manuel says Wheel Horse 4488 fluid for thr hydraulics, Is this just standard hydraulic fluid? The manuel also says to put sae 40 in the tranny. Ihad picked up some 80/90 but after checking the manuel I am not sure I should put that in it. Opinions/suggestions?
buckrancher 2,679 #2 Posted January 16, 2010 some use power steering fluid in the hyd. lift or mobil dte-24 hyd oil you can use 80/90 in a standard shift WH transmission I use that in some of mine The 854 I rebuilt has amsoil severe gear 75/110 in her

Stress Test Pullin 0 #4 Posted January 16, 2010 ive heard that standard hd-30 or ATF will work fine in them as well, but still new to hydro tractors

Rollerman 290 #6 Posted January 16, 2010 I have used universal tractor HYD fluid & ATF in these hydraulic pumps. Normally with most other horses They have what is called the 4,8, & 10 pinion rear ends & can run thicker or heavier oil. Your 953 & a few other Horses used a spider gear type differential & useing the thinner 40W might be better off for it.
linen beige 14 #7 Posted January 16, 2010 As shown in Jeff's post of the lube chart, the tranny takes one and a half quarts of SAE 90-140, A.P.I. service GL-5. The hydro unit takes three pints of type "A" transmission fluid. Type "A" is hard to find and Dexron III can be used instead.

WheelHorse_of_course 99 #9 Posted January 17, 2010 The Horses with Sundstrand hydro systems use one of the following Type A auto transmission fluid or Dextron III OR 30 Wt engine oil You need to keep using whichever of the above that is in use. You cannot tell for sure by the date, so you need to look at what is one the dip stick. You must disasemble and purge the system to change types.\ The dextron warms up a lot faster in the winter. Cheers
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #10 Posted January 17, 2010 Rolf......... It's a 953. The big one with the 3 speed gear drive Uni-Drive with the separate H-W hydraulic lift pump. No Sundstrand.
