72 Raider 8 Lighting

Recommended Posts

I have thought all night about this. I am currently trying to figure out how to wire some lights (etc. Headlights, and taillight) to the battery. ( I was thinking about this after a mile ride on it in the dark.) If I do this, will the lights drain the battery? (I am planning on using some old cheap, low wattage fog lights and an LED taillight for this.) Or, will doing this mess up the charging system? I will post pics later of what I am going to use. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Most would agree that going with LED's would be the smartest decision due to less draw on the battery.

Check out Duke's snow cab......he fiddled around with different set ups and did some tests for all of his lights to make sure that he was still able to maintain the battery with all of his contraptions.

Thanks for the input. I am just curious. I am not going for anything spectacular or anything. I just need some kind of lighting on it.

Ok, here is what I am working with. If this may be wrong or, if these lights may cause damage to the charging system. Please feel free to let me know. I want to be sure that this will work before I get too far into the project.

As you can see, the headlights I am planning on using. Are some cheap wal-mart fog lights. The tail I am planning on using has a interchangable lens. Plus, it is an LED light. So, I definately want to keep that LED. The old fog lights are 52 watts each. (I think)

Where I am planning on placing them are where the emblem would go close to the top of the hood. And, the tail. Where else would I put it other than where it should be! On the tail!

Here are a couple of pictures I took of it just before I started the lighting project.

Would probably depend on the amp draw of the 52 watt lights. If they draw an amp or 2 each, or less, they should do ok.Think I saw in another post, that the 2 standard 1156 bulbs draw somewhere around 2 amps each. Don't know what wattage the regular style bulbs put out, though.

I will have to do some research on that. I do know when I hook them up to my old battery charger. It shows on the gauge 2.5. I dont know what that means. Or, if it means anything at all. But, I will have to do some more research regardless.

Assuming your battery charger amp gauge is anywhere near accurate ...

and I'm assuming that's per fog light , not both together

2.5 amps is about (2.5 x 12 volts) = 30 real world watts , so yeah, about 52 Walmart Watts !!

I'm not familiar with the raider charging system - if its a 10 or 15 amp charge circuit - no problems with your modification

if it has a 2 or 3 amp unregulated charger circuit - then its a NO GO.

Maybe one light and the tail light might work in a 3 amp setup.

Are the headlites 52w apiece? Thats between an 8-9 amp draw to run those. Your LED is just about nothing. Just some info for you to chew on.

Any idea what your motors charging system gives out?

Mike.........

TT

It should have the "normal" 15 amp stator.

Well, my charger is an old beat up Sears charger. So, I would probably give that one a big ol no on the accuracy. I will have to put an ohmmeter to it and see what she reads.

Nope, what the gauge on my charger reads is with both lights attached and working. Im not sure of what the charging system puts out. The engine is a K-181s. So, I dont know what that means regarding the charging system.

All I know is that is is the K-181s. So, I really dont know. I have never messed with anything that has a Kohler in it so.....

Well, I nixed the lighting idea. One of our friends on here really helped me out!! Thanks, Matt! For taking the time to send me the grill piece! This helped me get the old Raider closer to that 100% completion!

Here is a pic of the tractor's nose. I will post pics of it when the next drive to the gas station comes up!
