Stigian 1,234 #1 Posted February 27, 2008 Just a quick question chaps. Would a 12hp K301AS engine bolt into my Raider 10 (K241S) or will i need to make any mods? Also would the K241S starter motor bolt straight onto the K301AS I need to get my Raider running asap or i wont have anything to cut the grass with
Rollerman 290 #2 Posted February 27, 2008 Ian the gear drive starter motors should swap okay. What did your K301 engine come out of? Size wise there the same engine outside. Kohler used some differant oil pans though....best you can do is slide it in the raider once you remove the K241 & see how it looks. But should be a pretty easy swap provided the crank dimensions are the same & the oil pans are of similiar type.
Stigian 1,234 #3 Posted February 27, 2008 Ive no idea what the engine came from Stephen, i asked the seller (yes its another ebay thing ) and he didnt have a clue. From the photo the mountings look the same, the engine has been painted blue with red tinware did any other mower makers use this engine in this colour I might be clutching at straws here a bit, i just need to get the Raider sorted as putting off the 4x4 conversion on the 312-8 is out of the question I should find out the crank dimentions i guess :P
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #4 Posted February 27, 2008 ...the engine has been painted blue with red tinware did any other mower makers use this engine in this colour... What immediately comes to my mind (other than food - it's lunch time) is Ford/Jacobsen.
Rollerman 290 #5 Posted February 27, 2008 I beleive blue was the standard color on Kohlers? "I have found a lot of non horse Kohlers that color?" It should be straight forward swap though. Check the crank diameter on your stock K241 on your Raider...some of the early ones were 1".....later versions were 1 1/8" I beleive. "well bigger" I would think you Raider would have the later larger diameter though? You should be able to swap the oil pan too in order to mount it up a bit easier without haveing to drill new holes in the frame or guess at lineing the engine up....that is assumeing the K301 engine doesn't have the Wheel Horse spec mounting hole locations on it. The K301 engine would be a nice power upgrade for you Raider 10 Ian.
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #6 Posted February 27, 2008 I believe blue was used on a lot of the "Basic" engines -- and it's not unusual to see a blue engine with red sheetmetal Service engines, long blocks, short blocks, mini-blocks tended to come in gray and some of those also had red sheetmetal If you do happen to have the spec number, you can check it on the list at Kohler.com to see who it was originally built for, or whether is was just a "Basic" (universal) engine. TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #7 Posted February 27, 2008 And, by the way, a service engine/short block comes with a new spec number sticker which is actually the part number for the engine/short block. (mini-blocks do too, I think ) It is supposed to be applied near the original I.D. sticker on the blower housing. (shroud) P.S. >> A mini-block is a short block that comes without a crankshaft.
Stigian 1,234 #8 Posted February 27, 2008 Cheers for all the help guys I cant get the ID working at Kohler.com, it wont let me unless im a dealer. So heres the ebay link, can any of you have better luck than me? Engine

TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #11 Posted February 27, 2008 I can tell you without going to Kohler that it IS off of a Wheel Horse! (spec. # 47648d) Let me see which model.......
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #12 Posted February 27, 2008 Would it be a C-121?
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #13 Posted February 27, 2008 Well Ian....... That's not quite right. The blower housing (with the number tag) came from a 1978 or 1979 C-121, which would have been a shallow sump rubber mount engine. The rest of the engine has the right type of oil sump for your Raider, but I would ask them to pull the cylinder head and measure the bore size before you commit to buying it. It could be a 10hp K-241 (or if you're lucky, it might be a 14 hp K-321! ) You'd be looking for 3.250" or 3.375" bore. (sorry, I'm not sure on mm's)
Stigian 1,234 #14 Posted February 27, 2008 Cheers for the research Terry If its a 10HP K241, thats cool as its what in the Raider The 14HP K-321 would be even better as i got out bid on one the other day by

Rollerman 290 #16 Posted February 27, 2008 Ian it still be an easy swap...it doesn't have the Wheel Horse spec oil pan. Thats a simple swap though & all your tin from the Raider engine will fit too. You might want to check with the seller unless you are going to have a look in person...but some of the Kohler K series had the model number cast into the block on the PTO side also. Stigian 1,234 #17 Posted February 28, 2008 You certainly know your WH stuff Stephen I was wondering if my tinware would fit as theres bits of tin missing from the ebay engine, it cool that it will fit I dont expect it to make more than
Rollerman 290 #18 Posted February 28, 2008 You certainly know your WH stuff Stephen Thanks Ian...I know a few things but I'm still learning. Thats the beauty of a Kohler though...parts interchangeability.
Stigian 1,234 #19 Posted March 2, 2008 Just had a message back from the seller, the good news is the end of the crank is 1 1/8 , the same as the k241 thats on the Raider No idea of the bore size though. Wish me luck, under 12 hours to go til the auction finishes
