baerpath 517 #1 Posted December 27, 2009 I bought a C 175 off craigslist from a church well cared for . Supposed non runner that need TLC Also the motor had been changed to a KT17 series 2 Unloaded it off the truck this morning and started tinkering. 1st thing I did was check the oil levels, both ends low way low 2nd started checking the starter to see why it wouldn't turn over (spun by hand) figured what the heck I have a starter so pulled the shroud off. I've never seen an engine so full of crap, carpet, grass clippings, two dead mice and nut shells Cleaned it all out with the blow gun made a mess of the shop Tried starter again just to check before pulling it off it works fine just was so packed it couldn't move Better check the air cleaner now..... had to pry the cover off it was so full then had to pry the filter off the base. Don't think they ever changed it Now it's runs and starts great took no money just a little time So much for great care Okay thats my little vent session Duane

If it wasn't for numnuts not taking care of tractors what would we have to fix and brag about. Took some stuff to the dump several years ago and found a craftsman 16 gallon shop vac with all the hoses and fittings. Been working fine for years AFTER a new filter!!! My sincere thanks to all those that don't take care of their equipment so I can buy good Wheelhorse for a $100 bucks. Nothing wrong with that to me!!
Confused99 2 #8 Posted December 28, 2009 I hear you on the maintenance these things sometimes get. I only got around 3/4 of a quart of oil out of the 520's engine when I bought it and that included what came out of the oil filter. It was extremely sludgy too and quite chunky. Now that I have a few hours on her I may change it again for good measure. Jason

546cowboy 301 #11 Posted December 31, 2009 I'll tell you that we shouldn't let people know how easy it is to fix some of these old mowers. I have been getting some riders for several years now and had some that ended up scrap but usually the engines are still good in most of them. The big box stores help a lot with their prices and taking credit cards and the repair shops help with their labor rates too. As far as I'm concerned I sure hope it doesn't end any time soon.
