C'mon, Rick....... he gave you the model number. :notworthy:

It's a 1988 257-H

My sources show that steering shaft was used in a BUNCH of lawn tractor models from 1978 all the way up to 1990.

I'm pretty sure that a garden tractor upper shaft can also be used if it's cut to length and drilled for the roll pin.

I know where there's a few used ones, but not any NOS pieces.

Make sure you check the lower steering support for damage and/or cracks.

If you only know part of the information, use the MPV at Toro.com:

https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/index.cfm?adv=yes&xCaller=Toro

If you have the model number, click on the "Model Search" button in the green header bar near the top of the page.

Information about finding what models a part fits if you have the part number can be found in this post here at RedSquare:

What happens is that the teeth jump when I turn the wheel, but only when Im stopped or going really slow. Rolling it works okay, even with the snowblower on the front. But I'd like to fix it so I can turn around and sell it in the spring. One has to go out before another can go in!

Something that you should try is to add shims between the steering bearing block and the roll pin on the shaft that runs horizontal to the ground. My mother's C175 would jump teeth if I turned it too tight, but this made it steer like new.

If you can pull the steering wheel up the lock collar may have slipped on the shaft

that would let the teeth jump under heavy load (steering while not moving)

Take a close look at the lower steering support too as they have a reputation for breaking. (this might not be visible until one of the bolts is removed)

You'll also need to make sure that the shaft collar is tight against the underside of the dash sheetmetal and that the bushing above the collar isn't bad. (I guess Brian beat me to the post.)

You should not be able to feel any excessive up - down movement at the steering wheel when everything is assembled. Check the metal flange where the bushing is installed - it may need bent back down to where it used to be.

Speaking of steering pinions I tore mine apart on a 953. This model has the ball on a bolt. One was wore out and fell out. Is there a different style to replace this with?

I think there is a guy on e-bay that sells rebuild kits for 953's

This is very interesting as I have just discovered that the lower steering support was broken (in the exact same places) as shown in the photo.

I had little play in the wheel, but not bad.

I’m hoping my welders will be able to repair it.

But I don’t understand what could cause this as the steering shaft and bushing (bronze) are in very nice shape, showing little if any wear.

Any thoughts?

It's difficult to see how they break at that point.  My suspicion is that it was used as a 'Jacking Point' at some stage in it's life and taking the whole weight of the Tractor on the small amount of cast metal ....... Only other direction of force would be down the length of the Upper Steering Shaft , maybe a Hammer blow ........Can't see any other way to break it! :dunno:

Is this the same part at Smithfarmandgarden.com?

When searching for the 106311-01 as soon as 106311 is entered it pops up as a choice as well as the -01 number.  -01 says discontinued but the 106311 is listed as available at $69.69 ouch. Now referenced as #88-2710-03 replacing #109733 (discontinued) that replaced #106311.  So I gather that the most recent is #88-2710-03 listed both on Parts Tree and Smith Farm and Garden.  Smith is listed in the links section under part supplierss, not OEm.

That part also shown available at Parts Tree for $79...

puddle jumper I am in need of a steering support block #109733/88-2710 for my WH 417A. Mine is not broken but both shaft holes are so worn that the shafts flop around, perhaps 1/16" side to side. If you still have one avialable I would like to hear back from you.

Thanks,

Stewart

I had the same thing happen on my 312-A a few years back. Luckily I found a replacement at an affordable price.  I still have the old one - I think these are cast iron so I'm not sure if they can be welded, at least maybe not by an amateur welder like me. Seems to be a common problem.

BTW, welcome to the forum, @JermstheITguy   You're in Philly, eh?  I used to live and work in that area.  Took the train from Warminster down to Market Street for a while. Eagles fan?  I still am, somewhat. I was even rooting for them a bit over the Colts recently.
