Recommended Posts

My newest addition to the Herd, a Workhorse GT-1642 8-speed, question though, where are the model #'s on these? I cannot find it anywhere! lol Does need some work, but everything intact. best of all got it cheap!

Sorry for the bad pictures, my brother just dropped it off before I got home and it was getting dark.

Looks to be in good shape, not rusty at all. What's the difference between a GT1600 and a GT1642?

The VIN sticker would have been right below the PTO engagement lever on the right side of the hoodstand.

Your tractor has had some paint work and it looks to be painted over or gone.

Look on the blower housing near the front of the engine for the "CODE" number. It's possible to narrow down the year of the tractor with that number - but there's no guarantee.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is what I have come up with on the model number difference:
The 1982/83 models were sold with the mower deck included in the advertised price. In 1984, Wheel Horse possibly sold the LT/GT Work Horse models as just the tractor with the mower available separately for an additional cost - just like the Wheel Horse tractors were sold for years.
I never bought one new, so I don't know if that's true. :notworthy: Either way, they're still the same tractor. (more or less)
hey Brian...nice horse...can't help with the serial #. Question...I am also a Navy vet...1970-1974...wasn't the Savannah one of the first (if not the first) nuclear ships? I remember building a plastic model of that ship when I was alot younger.
Looks too be in pretty nice shape. I know where one of them is real clean and real cheap myself.I think I'm gonna grab it this week. It has a mint 48 inch mower deck on it. That alone is worth something.
Don't know the difference, figured the 1642 was 16 hp and 42 inch deck, but I could be wrong.
Hey stevasaurus! nice to meet another squid lol! the Savannah (Now Decommisioned) was a (AOR-4) Auxiliary Oiler Replenisher 4 of 4 Oilers I was in the early 80's.
BTW: The Workhorse only set me back 50.00, I need more of these!
I have a 1984 GT1100 S#83112811 Type 0664-01. The s# is under the pto lever. It is a 11HP Briggs with a 8 speed tram. It is a very good machine. I have the parts & service Manual from the first owner. It is for the GT1800, GT1600 and the GT1100. I also have the Operator's manual for them. This information may help you to check on parts from the Toro site. If you need a copy of these let me know.
You can look under my restore and see what it looked like and see how it looks now. They painted that one about the same color as the one I fixed up.
Good luck with it.
Tried finding it, but I too think it has been painted, it is no longer there, the guy said the starter was bad, but have a safety switch or regulator bad, will not start with key but will if jumping across the regulator. the guy also rolled it so I am going to have to either repair the hood or find a replacement. and I may need that info!
I had the same trouble with mine it would not start with the switch. Found the clutch safety switch to be bad. Try jumping it and see if it will start. Check all of the safety switches first. That is where I found my problem.
I put a hood on mine off of a 300 series. If you can't find one my son has one he would sell.
I don't see any trace of hood latches on Brian's tractor, which - if I am seeing correctly - would make it a 1982. (model #A1-164201)
@ Russ: The GT-1800 was indeed a 1984 only model, but - with the exception of the obvious model # / decal differences - the GT-1848 was essentially the same tractor and added two more years to the total production run.
:notworthy: Sweet! You will really like it.
Here is a picture of the 83 Work Horse GT-1642 (A1-164202) I picked up this past summer.
Mdl # as TT stated earlier should be located right here:
going to start on those safety switches this weekend, and going to double check for the model #, the guy thought the starter was bad, he had a VERY steep backyard and rolled this tractor 3 different times, and when he rolled it the last time, his wife told hem to go buy a new tractor, he went and bought a Craftsman(This is what he told my brother) anyways, when he told him that, he didn't have the heart to tell him that the craftsman was not near a tractor as the Wheeelhorse!
I did tinker with it last night, the reason the engine cowl is off is the guy thought the starter was bad, it was ran later this summer, so I knew the fuel would still be okay, checked all other fluids, all ok. jumped across solenoid, and she turned over, added some fuel to carb, and BINGO she is running, so now I know it will run, all gears work, and the hi/low works also.
And it does have hood latches, well on one side it does, lol!
I'm not the brightest candle on the cake,
but I think after the 1st TIME I ROLLED IT, I would have figured out a better direction to mow :thumbs:
Also poor guy must have hurt his head at some point ... :WRS:
If he went out and bought a Craftsman :notworthy:
:)
i have a 312 hood just down the street from you if you want it, it just sitting out back and taking up room. i don't think there is any dents but it does have some surface rust. give me a shout if you want it.
i had a gt 1800 at one time, i did not like the briggs so a friend of mine has it now. nice tractor though, got it stuck in the mud out back and the kids had fun watching me throw mud 20 ft in the air.
Howdy neighbor! will have to take you up on that offer Jason, I am about 2 miles from exit 64 (walesboro) corner of 400w and 550s, I could use it. Besides would be nice to talk to someone local who is also a WH fan!
