1993 314-8 Restoration Project

Recommended Posts

stevebo

Well today I sold the 310-8 after my restoration so... cannot waist time so started to pull the 314-8 apart. Ken B came over today and helped me get the motor started as this one sat in the woods for a few years and needlass to say the entire shroud was filled with nests. When I tired to crank it over last night the motor would not turn. Pulled the plug and poured mystery oil dow to try and free it up. After taking the shroud off I was able to free up the started and move the flywheel using a bar. It will need a new starter selinod as I had to bypass it to get it to fire over.

Here are some before pics ...

Before the first pressure washing.....

After the sheetmetal was removed and second and final pressure washing prior to paint..

Can't see much of the hood and fender pans in your pics, Stevebo, but it looks like the only serious paint issue is the motor tins? That's an interesting rust pattern - almost looks like wood grain.....

Here are a few pics of the progress today. I used rusty metal primer with a brush to prime the frame and tranny. I find this does a nice job and when topcoated comes out very well. I plan on spraying the topcoat using restoration valspar IH. I pulled the motor off on this one because when I removed the shroud most of the botls broke off and I need to drill and ez out them or drill and tap :notworthy:

I plan on just trying to use the ez out and if that does not work then I plan on drilling and tapping each one.

I have been working on this one all weekend and here is where I stand. I ended up brushing the fram and tranny using IH red (non resto series). My first attempt to use IH resto out of a spray bomb ended up having a reaction to the rusto primer :notworthy: So after wiping all the resto series paint off using thinner I changed plans. I really like the way this paint brushes on and the color is slightly darker (deeper) than the resto series. My only concern is longevity but this one is not going to be a show tractor but a nice worker. I put the dash decals on and they look great too. the tires were painted but are pretty dry so when I change them I will have the rims sandblasted. I am a little tight right now on my spending funds

This one is a pic of the steering shaft. I have yet to see the plastic covers actully stay in place. The PO of my 416 covered the shaft with a stainless pipe so I did the same thing. I like the clean look and no folling with the plastic. dash.jpg

Rick,

I plan on putting the 3 point on the 520 however the 3 poiints will work on both hydro or manual lift tractors.

Here are the pics of the motor painted, running and back in the tractor. After i filled the cylinder with marvel mystery oil it had to burn out of the muffler which took some time. I still have to get the electronics figures out. I have a bad ground or something as the power to the battery is hit and miss. I got the sheetmetal back today. They are all primed using rusto filler primer. This one is coming along very nice. I think I will be getting decals from Terry which are the maroon strip and not black toro/wheelhorse. This is a 314-8 but I may add the 414-8 decals seeing as though it has the larger tires all around with the 14hp. Any thoughts on how the 93 314-8 is any different from the mid to late 80's 414-8??? This has the incorrect hood so not sure if it needs to stay orignal. I am open to the feedback from you guys on the decals. Choice is either 314-8 or 414-8 maroon stripe or black 314-8 if anyone has a good source for that decal set. I really like the decals from terry.

Any thoughts on how the 93 314-8 is any different from the mid to late 80's 414-8???

It might be the tranny. I thought the 300's had the 1"axles with 4 pinions and the 400's had the 1 1/8th" axles with 8 pinions :notworthy: . There might be a difference in the dash as the 400 might have more gages such as hour/volts and all the idiot lights. The steering wheel on the 400 might of been the "soft" one which was an upgrade.

Just a guess of course as I cant find my mid 80's sales brochure.

Personally I would keep it decaled as the 314-8 that it started life out as. No one can call you a lier that way  .

Just looked closer at the pics and see that you do have all the dash goodies so maybe the diff is just the tranny and steering wheel.

Looks great Steve,

The primer almost glows in the pictures.

I have not seen anyone produce the black decals. If you find some I would be interested too.

Looks like a 414-8 to me. :notworthy:

Steve, the one difference that there may be is axle thickness, and did 414's come with mag's or K's. If you need help with electronics let me know. that is my favorite hood (is it off an onan or twin kohler with top mount air intake) they look bad a**

Did you swap the steering wheels? Does it have an idoit light panel, like my 312 and 416 had??

314 and maroon, do not like the black

I would keep it a 1993 314-8. Thats what it was and thats what its always going to be unless you put a different transmission in it with 1 1/8 axles. Anyways its coming along great. Cant wait for my arm to get better so I can start on my 310-8. Maybe I will make it a 410-8 :notworthy: And BTW if you need any help I am just right down the road( I cant do anything here so troubleshooting wiring shouldnt be too hard but give me something to do).

Its your tractor, put what decals you like on it.

Is it a 314 or a 414?......its both.

If you sell it, just be honest as to what the tractor has on it.

Guys,

Just got off the phone with terry and I will be going with the 314-8 decals ....in old school maroon. I like the look of the black decals however I just really like the maroon stripe.

Will,

That hood came off a 418 and it is straight. I had to fill a few small pit holes on the bottom front but other than that is is nice. I had one other like that which was my 417-8 that RUSS (saltywright) has and it is helping his disel horse breath better now..

I hope to have this painted with new decals sometime next week. Very close to being done with this one.. next one is the C105....
