1978 B-111 REFURBISH

Recommended Posts

~ETC~

OK SO I JUST GOT A (from what im told) 1978 B-111 WHEEL HORSE FOR $50 IT WAS PAINTED METAL FLAKE BLUE.

my plan is to repaint it red and attack a snow plow meant for a walk behind gravely, create custom hubs to allow the attachment of balloon quad tires, create a plow lift system, tune up the engine, rebuild the carb, tear down transaxle, create headlight lense, attach new tail lights, and attach snow chains

i will post pics along the way.

oh yeah forgot to mention. this WH was purchased from a kid who though it could cross small streams... it ended up fully submerged..............

as it looked after it ran again:

Reminds me of a good joke about jackasses ....

A man went to apply for a job. After filling out all of his applications, he waited anxiously for the outcome. The employer read all his applications and said, "We have an opening for people like you." "Oh, great," he said, "What is it?" "It's called the door!"

you should pass that joke along to your friend.

Maybe he will get the hint. (Don't count on it - they never do!)

Sparky

Two bum trannys? That sucks.

I'm thinking you just need to add some weight to the rear rims/tires and you'll be all set for winter duty (and fix the tranny of course :notworthy: ).

Mike..........

There's a real good thread here about melting lead pipe to make wheel weights.

It might be what you need to finish off your project !!

looking at a few of your pictures on your photo bucket page it seems you have a massive hole in one of your trnasmissions. you dont need to fix that you need to get a whole new transmission for it.

100_0003.jpg

from your photo bucket.

the transmission under these small B verts are made by peerless and are not the wheel horse cast iorn rear ends that are beefy. these rear ends are made of cheap cast aluminum and possably pot metal and haveing a hole means no lube in the trans and also lets dust and dirt in destroying your bearings gears and all the other inner workings. Personaly i would consider that trans a parts donor for the other one and try to find a scrap tractor with the same rear but in good condition for your plow tractor.

problem is both trans have that hole in them.......

ive had the issue of too much traction and not enough movement so something had to give and it was the left side spider gear on the axle shaft splitting in half an making that horrendous hole.

and i was only plowing around 3 inches of snow in 1st gear an i was half way down my driveway.......it was going fine an with no warning there's a hop and a clunk and next thing i know fresh new gear lube all over the ground.

i know there was nothing wrong with the trans i pulled it apart an checked the diff before i decided to use it. as this isnt the first, second, or even the third time this has happened.. all my peerless 669 trans have done this at some point.

as for the one pictured with the re-barb on the frame......i left the hole an welded the spiders made it full time posi. that one has lasted 3 months like that at speeds of 20+mph w no lube but finally caught up with it.... the casing split at the top where the trans gear meshes with the drive gear on the diff housing

im currently looking to upgrade my transmissions on my wh to something stronger for vert shaft.....

i forsee lots of fab work regardless... but what trans to use? every other mower weve ever used have catastrophically failed by splitting completely down the middle (mainly older craftsmans did this from my experience... any anything else that 5 used the same 5 spd trans as the older 50" cut ridin mowers by craftsman have done the same for other members)
