Powder Coating Vs Wet Paint

Recommended Posts

I know I have another thread running in relation to the right wet paint to get in the UK but I've just been to see two local Powder Coaters and I was surprised by the price quoted for all of the tin work on the horse.

It would be blast cleaned, zinc primed, and have 3 or 4 coats of powder paint on top of that.

The colour that is the closest match is RAL 3013 TOMATO RED. We checked this with a swatch against paint concealed behind a sticker.

The only down side of powder coat is I have never seen a p/c job that was not "orange peeled" maybe it's gotten better over the years? But if you are looking for a glass like finish, spray and rubbing is the only way.

I'm wondering about the ability to "touch up" a scratched powder coated panel. If your tractor is a worker - then scratches, etc are probably inevitable.

Cheers

From research the "Orange Peel" effect only takes place where the coating has been applied very thinly.

I want it painted to look good and be tough as the horse will be used on a site where there is lots of dust flying around in summer and then for the rest of the time as is normal in Yorkshire "RAIN"!!!

I won't be showing this horse in any shows so it doesn't have to be concours condition.

From what I'm reading the powder coated paint can be touched up. It's basically a paint but, applied in a different way to wet paint. Also they say it's more scratch resistant than other paint types?

A nice thing is that it's environmentally friendly as well as it has no solvents in when it's applied. :notworthy:

Just a word of caution. Some powder coat finishes are somewhat brittle and will crack where flexed. That could mean a loss of adhesion from something like a hood or thin metal fenders. Ask about the brittleness of the process you're looking at before going with it.

I had the roll bar in my Corvette powder coated black. It looked great and was very durable. I dont know how it will be on a tractor but we used it exclusively on our dirt track cars, it held up better than paint on the undercairage.

Powder coating is gonna b cheaper for ya. Sinceyou don't have the equip. or the place to do it. The durability of the paint vs. p/c is like night and day. P/c is the best way to go.

We have a lot of our equipment parts powder coated and the ONLY drawback I can see is that you can't do any body work with plastic filler on a part to be powder coated. If your parts are straight enough for you and you're happy with the quality of work that the powder coater has done on other jobs you've seen, then go for it, you won't be sorry.

Thanks for all the advice so far :notworthy:

I'm gonna have to get a heater for the garage before I start stripping the horse as it's a wee bit cold in there.

Earlier this summer I was wondering the same thing , on trying to match up colors between spray on and powder coat. So I got the PC sample and had paint mixed up to match that. Early Horse color for my C-160.

Anyway then I did a Horse trailer to see how it would match out. I had the box and tailgate PC'd then I sprayed the tongue and axle area , latch parts etc. Then after assembly everything matched up perfect!

The powdercoated box is real tough, I load it with my Bobcat skidsteer, I dig in it with my shovel, material slides out when dumping, the PC is very tough!
