What Red shade of paint is the best match for Wheel Horse 300-500 Series from 1986 thru 1992?

I heard that Krylon Cherry Red is one close match.

I was thinking that 15-20 cans would be a bit much... I think about 10 would be plenty.

If you are going to take it completely apart and paint the frame, transmission and everything, then then it takes alot of cans. I'm with the 12+ guys.

I didn't know and bought four. worked for a week, then bought four more, etc, etc, etc.

It was comical, everytime that we went to Menards, the wife would ask "Do you need more paint?"

I'll tell you one thing you better start working out your right and left pointer fingers. :notworthy: Your going to need the added strength.

With the money you spend on 15 cans at $5 apiece you could buy a gun, 2 qt of color and a qt of clear and be set and ready for the next one. Oh yeah, no carple tunnell from rattling so many cans.

If you will be doing the entire tractor then I'd start with 8. This paint actually goes a long ways. It will also depend on how many coats you want to put on the tractor. Will you be doing any wet sanding and buffing with a buffer once the paint is cured? If so, then you will want to put more coats on it because with wet sanding and buffing you will actually be removing paint. If you wet sand and buff remember to be careful around corners etc. because the paint will be thinner there and you don't want to burn thru the paint here. I start wet sanding with 1000 grit wet dry paper and usually take it to 1500 when I'm going for a real looker.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of a decent compressor if you don't have one already. :notworthy:

That's an excellent question Ken,

What produces a long lasting beautiful paint job?

the wet sanding? or just laying on coats?

I will most likely be using this tractor like a tractor would be used so that will most likely affect the longevity of the job.

Too be honest, what it all boils down to is how much do you want too spend on repainting your tractor. If you plan too work the tractor you might want too think twice about spending alot of money on automotive type paints if its going too bother you if it gets scratched up etc. from hard use. When I was restoring Cub Cadet tractors I used only automotive paints thru a spray gun. It can get a little pricey with the cost of the paint, reducers and hardeners. I'll be the first to admit that I hated it when I scratched one up while working it or if one of my kids decided too run one of his Hotwheels across its hood, so I wound up with four tractors in my garage that I didn't want to scratch up. I got rid of all of them.

For a tractor you want too look nice and use forget the expensive stuff, save that for the show only tractors. You can get a plenty nice paint finish with the Valspar that will look just as good as the expensive stuff. Just my opinion of course.

I've been using the restoration series paints by Valspar available at tractor supply on my Wheel Horses. I don't know how this paint holds up to UV rays yet but the beauty is I don't care too much as it didn't cost too much. Wet sanding and buffing paint won't make it last longer as you are doing that too remove orange peel, dust and what not that is going too land on the paint no matter how hard you try too keep things clean. I put a few extra coats on because I know I'll be removing a few in the wet sanding and buffing process. If you haven't done much painting, practice a little on some old scrap metal to get the feel for it. Above all else have fun with it and keep us posted.

i agree with it being costly to paint a machine, thats why i bought my inexpensive spray gun,i can buy 1 gallon of tremclad regal red for 35 $,i can paint lots of stuff, carts, decks plows, etc and the tractor of course, here is a pic of it,it uses mason jars as the cup,so when done painting just put a lid on it and put it on the shelf, and environmentally good too because you just clean the suction tube and tip and its clean! 010.jpg
