T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,505 #1 Posted October 19, 2009 I saw an ad in yesterday's tractors for a 2135 with a bad engine for $40. So, I call the guy and he says he has another Cub also that he wants to get rid of. So I asked him, what model? He says, wait and he'll look. Turns out it was a 2135 also. So I asked him how much for that one - he says give him $50 for them both. I said sold. I picked them up Saturday. One (with the supposedly bad engine) has 424 hours on it, both rear tires off the rim, dirty to the point of being black. It has a bagger and both engine side panels are also there, but not on the tractor. The other one, has a busted transmission housing (which the guy told me) and has one rear tire that won't air up. One engine side panel is on the tractor, the other one is laying on the seat. I'm thinking since the transmission is cracked on the same side as the tire that won't air up, that someone dropped the tractor off the truck. It has only 150 hours on it. Anyways, I get them home and I got both of them started. The one with the supposedly bad engine runs great, but may have some wiring issues. The other one, with the busted transmission, also runs, but will need a major carb cleaning. So I guess I might be looking for a transmission. So, does anyone know what Hydro-Gear transmission model these have? BTW, they're both the same year, 1996.
Suburban 550 28 #2 Posted October 19, 2009 Can't beat that price, T-Mo. Great lookin' pair of tractors. Good luck in locating a transmission. :scratchead:
Kelly 1,029 #3 Posted October 20, 2009 Those are not garden tractors, but they mow very nice, my brother had one about like them, if you figure out what trans you need get with me I have a couple hydros from the small units. I see you making a little money on them, at the price you paid :scratchead:
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,505 #4 Posted October 20, 2009 Kelly, I think the transmission is Hydro-Gear BDU-10 something, but I haven't verify that yet. Anyways, one from a 2135, 2145, 2165, and a 2185 will work, and I suspect one from any 2000 series hydro would work. I might keep one of them to use as a mower, and sell the other one (if I find a transmission at a real reasonable price). Or if I have to sacrifice one to make one, then I don't know. Sell it or keep it? Don't know. And yes, they're not a garden tractor, though CC claims the 2185 can handle ground engaging attachments like a tiller, but they're definitely not a garden tractor. T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,505 #7 Posted October 21, 2009 Too bad I'm so far from you, Perry. Shipping to Missouri would be expensive, I believe. Maybe if the transportation network here at RS would be an option. :scratchead:
hodge 6 #8 Posted October 21, 2009 A good find for the money, but it also brings to light a well mentioned point- look at what they cost new, where they are now, and where a comparable WH is- still going strong. And, if it isn't, it is much easier, and cheaper, to get going again.

And, if it isn't, it is much easier, and cheaper, to get going again. These would be comparable to Wheel Horse's 200 series tractors. They have a heavy duty frame, and are shaft driven. They're not garden tractors, for sure, but are a heavily built lawn or yard tractor, much like a Wheel Horse 244 would be. I wouldn't mind finding a Cub Cadet SGT myself. :scratchead:
