C160 Resto

Recommended Posts

This is gonna be slow going but...at least I've gotten started!

I picked this C160 up last year, off a local.. it was in running shape, agree'd to purchase it minus the 16 hp Kohler, well it got delivered minus alot of other things...

Here are some photos from not long after it got dropped off..

Missing wheel bolts (only three on the other side, and one is rusted beyond use)

The Missing Panel

IMG_5826.jpg

Kinda hard to see, but several bolts are missing, if any sheet metal is, I'd like to know

IMG_5828.jpg

Ahhh the wiring system..Nice Eh?

IMG_5829.jpg

IMG_5830.jpg

IMG_5831.jpg

The Cable ends were just cut, instead of removed

IMG_5832.jpg

It got these itty bitty front rims/tires

IMG_5833.jpg

The Hood is in decent shape, except for a hole being drilled, and the headlight lense is broken

IMG_5834.jpg

More of the wiring, Oh this rear tire, has a tube, but no valve Core...WTH?

IMG_5835.jpg

and I dunno what the heck all this is about..

IMG_5836.jpg

Founda motor for it, not long ago, a K301, that Id hoped was in running shape, but...no such luck it needs a rebuild, but hey, its all there, and the price wasnt bad either.

Broken Oil Drain..not a bad fix, the Rusted Valve seats, and valves are another matter.

Got your work cut out for sure, but I've seen worse. Keep your eyes open, those 16hp engines do show up once in awhile and you'll never regret it . Nice they took the voltage regulator and hacked up the wiring...

Is the sheetmetal trim under the dash stand missing too?

Actually I dont think it looks that bad! None of the "butchery" is irreversible, and you would probably have wanted to redo the wiring anyway. And the sheetmetal looks pretty good too.

Looking forward to watching this one get knocked back into shape! :scratchead:

Well, I started on the bodywork today. Doing the hood first.

I peeled the decals off (found old ones painted over under those)

Now, I prefer NOT to media blast my parts, well the bigger sheet metal anyhow. By sanding, it gives you a great guide coat to see any spots that need fixed, before you waste money in primer, that your just going to sand off later..

Just used some 80 grit and a Orbital sander, you can see the circled spots are dents, and one high spot..some will block out in primer, others need to be worked out using a hammer/dolly method. I will probably NOT use any plastic filler, as the heat from the motor, over time, is gonna work it loose. So if I cant get it close enough using hammer/dolly method, Ill put down some lead..

I will add, that the one Hub is totally trashed, as is the axle. I can fix the axle I think...

I have a hub coming, picked it up off Evil Bay,

Fellow RS member Raider (Jason) has shipped me a Gas Tank, and the hold down stuff.

I still Need

Front Rims/Tires

Choke/Throttle Cables

A Wiring Diagram

the Dash Plate

Headlight lens

K301 Carb

Voltage Regulator

Hyd. Hoses (I sold the ones off here to Karl, with the intent of removing the Hyd. Lift, but have since thought better of it...so Now I need them too

I'm sure there is more that Im forgetting...i'll add to the list as I find stuff

Thanks for the comments all -

Sarge yes the Sheet metal cover is gone,

Mike, it was in better shape when I agree'd to buy it, guess I went on and took it to save it from being parted out, or something else.. jsut wish that they wouldnt have done the stupid things, like hack up the wiring, and the choke/throttle cables - Oh well!

I just pulled hood decals off an '87 416-8 and could not get the decal residue to come off - hit it with car cleen for paint prep, acetone, naphtha, nothing touched it - goof off seemed to work but only rolled it off in layers - tough stuff.

Any secrets to getting the decal residue off cleanly and quickly ?

Not a bad looking tractor. Hate what the PO did but thats how it goes. Good luck with it.

SaveOldIron

I had to remove that glue for the foot rest yesterday and ended up useing 80 grit on a 90 die grinder. Might be over kill but it worked and as long as I was whatching what I was doing didnt take to much metal off.

Good Luck Guys.

P.J.

Scott,

I think I may be able to help you out with a dash plate and throttle cables. I'll have to check if the cables are good. The assembly would be off a 16 auto. So it should work.

PM me if you are interested. I can help you out with other parts you might need down the road.

Chuck - Brake Kleen will soften it up, and you can scrape it off using a putty knife, or I use Lacquer Thinner and a Scrub pad, and it comes off pretty quick.

Charlie - PM Sent

PJ - yeah, kind of a dirty deal, but It got saved from a possible worse fate

Looks like a salvageable tractor from here. The C-160 is a great plowing machine IMO. I put a couple of extras in the box I sent you including the dash plate off my B-100, it looked the same as the one on my C-160 so it should work for you I believe. I also found the spring and the petcock for the gas tank so you'll just need a grommet, fuel line and filter. I think the sheet metal for the center tunnel is just a flat piece, I'll double check that shortly on mine. Your rear wheels look pretty narrow compared to mine also at least in the pics. What year is yours?

It's a shame the PO messed it up Scott, but I know it's in good hands.

Well, its totally stripped down, to the frame and the Hydro..

Its in pretty good Shape really.. The Brass bushings for the brake pedal are shot, but the steering all looks in great shape, as do the Tie Rods. I've got a friend with a Blast Cabinet, so He's gonna blast it all for me. I'll get that stuff to him one night this week.

My New Hubs are sitting here, along with Fuel Tank, and dash plate (Thanks Raider)

Photos - Shortly!

Scott ,

just to followup on a previous question on removing decal residue - I used some PARKS citrus stripper on the residue - took it off and the paint beneath it in 10 minutes - just brush it on and leave for a while - then push the residue off with a plastic scraper - a lot less work than any other method mentioned.

Thanks

Scott, You can also "cook" decal residue with a torch or a heat gun to make it brittle. It will then flake right off or sand easily. You know enough about welding to know how to do this without damaging a panel.
