tarcoleo 119 #1 Posted October 8, 2009 Brake band PN9593 is priced everywhere at $51 plus. Others previously in this forum have converted go-kart bands for use on WH. My C-81 was found to have no friction material left on its steel brake band. Was glad to learn that such a conversion is possible. A search turned up the band below which looks like it can be made to work. Others may find this useful. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/lgpa...aBandBrakes.php Tom in RI :scratchead:

tarcoleo 119 #3 Posted October 9, 2009 A caution to those who would replace brake bands on C series WH's. The bands are attached with small 1/4" bolts which thread into an integral shoulder-part of the cast iron transmission housing. Undo these bolts with the greatest caution. They are in a location given to high rates of corrosion. Use lots of time and penetrating oil before trying to take them out or they will snap leading to all kinds of grief. I know. Duff 206 #4 Posted October 11, 2009 Tom, same with the 300-, 400-, and maybe even the 500-series machines with 8-speeds (don't know anything about the hydros). Good advice you give. I replaced mine with SS bolts for just that reason. Just be careful torquing them in. Duff :scratchead:
rick 235 #5 Posted October 11, 2009 "Just be careful torquing them in" That's what I'm talking about! Exactly what strength are the hardware store ss bolts? The ones I am familiar with are marked 307 on the head....
pfrederi 17,866 #6 Posted October 11, 2009 Most unrated SS 1/4" bolts have a tensile strength of 70,000 PSI. I think you will mess up the casting and or threads before the bolt fails...
tarcoleo 119 #7 Posted October 11, 2009 Yes, one of the 1/4" bolts snapped--the outermost one of the two--that secure one end of the brake band to the tranny. No luck drilling it out, the drill bit tip broke in the hole half way through. With just one bolt hole remaining, a wrap-around strap was riveted to one end of a go-kart brake band and secured with a single stainless bolt to the tranny. The strap wraps around the tranny boss and it "ain't goin' nowhere". The other end of the brake band is riveted to the L-shaped WH fitting that attaches to the brake actuator rod. Got brakes! This is a reasonably happy ending to a stupid error in extracting the old bolts. Tom in RI :scratchead:
