Stigian 1,234 #1 Posted February 14, 2008 Evening all. For those of you new to RedSquare by the way, this is a continuation of this thread. Plow part 1 Err.. Book2 Chapter 1 "Its a bit of a tight fit" A tight fit indeed, nothing of a naughty nature but trying to make an angle change lever for the plow has been fun After lots of ing and holding bit of box at strange angles i came up with this. HHmmm. <_< me thinks i might of forgot to check for clearance with the blade lowered and angled to the left. Oh, things not to do while build a plow In a moment of not thinking quite what i was doing, i decided that trying to change the blade angle while the blade was on the deck was a good idea. It was after giving the lever a good that i remembered the lever mount was only tacked on. Well it was the lever falling to the floor that reminded me With the mount welded back on to the the A-frame, and a bit of cutting and shutting on the lever it looked like this. Im quite happy with the way the two levers (one being the PTO) line up well Three photo's in one Time to get the plow off my Wheel Horse, im glad i got my measurements right and left enough gap for the plow to slide out the front To be continued........ Its grub time :D
nylyon-(Admin) 7,268 #2 Posted February 14, 2008 Now you went and done it, trick photography! Everything is looking great, but you had best paint that lever quickly, we know what happens when Horses are forced to wear Deere colors!
combatmp29r 27 #3 Posted February 14, 2008 Again an excellent bit of engineering Ian well maybe not the testing of your tack weld, but still very nice

Stigian 1,234 #9 Posted February 14, 2008 9. ing we know what happens when Horses are forced to wear Deere colors! I dread to think No need to panic karl, the green will be vanishing tomorrow Ian, I'm quite certain that, between you and Mith, ol' Isambard Kingdom Brunel would be proud of his fellow countrymen Cheers Greg HHmmm one of Brunel's bridges might come in handy should i ever need some very thick metal for a project Yeah I'm still floored by the trick photography Not so much trick photograph, more like three photos layered on top of each other on the pc. It would of been quite a funny sight i expect, camera on a table with a knife under the camera to give it some downward angle, and me trying to press the button while hiding under the table so not to create shadows Can't wait to see what comes next Ian...... That makes two of us Stephen Right, back to the plot In order to make a start at getting rid of some of the green paint, i cut the top of the lever off and welded on a couple of bits of tube. Makes a change from box Ta-Daa the lever now has a er.. lever on it The silver lever was a clutch lever from an old Webb cylinder mower, i knew it would come in handy one day At the other end of the cable it looks a bit like this. I still need to make up a bracket to hold the outer cable in place, but that i think is the last of the fabrication work. Thanks for reading and all the comments More to come, as it gets done :D
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #10 Posted February 15, 2008 Ian, I need to add another to the list: 10. Ingenuity (or is that part of no. 9. ) Seriously though you do have some good and interesting solutions to the problems.
Stigian 1,234 #11 Posted February 15, 2008 10 and 9 might well be the same thing JD Terry I guess my building style is kinda throw it all in a pile and work it out from there Or is it more like, make it up as i go along My solutions to the problems, is to take what i have and make it work, and if it doesnt work hit it with a hammer until it does Im not sure this update can be called an update as its so small, so it shall be called "one of them strange pages you find in between chapters, in some books" Douglas Adams is very good at that And on to some metalwork. One part of the plow ive never really been happy with is the blade angle locking pin. A bit of threaded rod being dragged through a bit of box is never going to be smooth or that long lasting <_< Fear not Karl, I have a cunning plan Well a simple plan involving a bit of thick wall tube and a couple of blobs of weld. To hold the outer cable at the angle pin end of things, a simple bracket was knocked up from some flat steel that bolts to bit of angle welded into the A-frame. Unbolt the bracket and theres enough space to get the locking pin out Well thats all the fabrication work done, all it needs now is a few welds tidied up, a good de-rust and some paint I made a start by welding up a few bolt holes and a bit of grinding on the angle change lever finished off with a coat of rattle can primer to keep the rust at bay for the weekend As for the green paint, it wasnt a JD colour more like "British Mower racing green"
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #12 Posted February 15, 2008 Don't forget to weld a brake cable guide from the front of a cycle on your angle lever! (you know - the wire "loop" that bolts on by the fender to hold the cable away from the tire.) That would give it some extra chrome too. Glad to see it's almost done, Ian! (and "field tested" too ) Now....... I can't wait to see it with some paint ! :P
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #13 Posted February 16, 2008 Ian, I got to say, "Ya da Man!" Nice work. I can't wait to see the pictures when you get some paint on it.
Stigian 1,234 #14 Posted February 16, 2008 It wont be long until it gets painted guys Not WH red though as i have a tin of red smoothrite sittin on the shelf. At least it will match my Raider 10 should the plow ever end up on (or is it under?) it
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #15 Posted February 18, 2008  10 (11?) Knows who Brunel was Now *that* would be some scrap. My Great Great Great Great Grandfather (Cyrus Field) bought Brunel's collosal great iron ship the The Great Eastern to lay the first Atlantic Telegraph cable. She had both paddle wheels and screws and was a complete loss (just too big) until Field found out about it and bought it for pennies on the dollar.

Stigian 1,234 #17 Posted February 20, 2008 Sorry its been 5 days since my last update Ive been a bit too tired in the evenings to get my head around it Anyway bits have been turning red at last Cheers for the help Garry A splash of matt black here and there Garry even let rip with the chrome effect paint And last but not least, tarting up the blade was needed. Due to popular demand the "road sign look" has made a come back I didnt notice the arrows were out of line until i had a look at the photo's on the ol pc. A bit late to notice As we all know a wheel Horse (i did manage to get one in tonight ) should be painted red. but im not sure red works with the road sign look What do you think guys, stick with red for the front or black or add colour to taste The front of the blade has only had one coat of red stuff in this photo. Not long now until its finished :D
Greg B. 1 #18 Posted February 20, 2008 Way to go, Ian. That's lookin' good. I'd leave the red on the blade.. It'll look a bit like you stole a wall out of one of those guard boxes that the soldiers in the funny hats hide in! Greg B.
Sparky-(Admin) 21,300 #19 Posted February 20, 2008 Just shoot the blade red. It'll be easier to touch up than the road sign arrows after the paints scratched off from plowing. Nice job as usual Ian. mike........
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #20 Posted February 21, 2008 Ian, I would leave it as it is - the blade is just awesome, man. Nice job all the way around.

Stigian 1,234 #22 Posted February 21, 2008 Cheers for all the cool comments guys I dont expect the to last too long before it wears away. When it does i will just paint the blade all red, and see how fast i can wear that off
kpinnc 11,894 #23 Posted February 21, 2008 Very nice work Ian. Looks great! kevin
Stigian 1,234 #24 Posted February 22, 2008 Chapter "The end is here" Well the end of the build, but the start of the fun The plow seems to work as planned, i just needed to adjust the blade angle locking pin Oh and tighten up the pivot bolt, we forgot to tighten it more than hand tight when it was quickly thrown back together A few photos for ya all From the front. From the back. Nice silver 's And on the 312-8 looking a bit dirty Just in case your wondering how it got dirty, enjoy the vid Getting the blade dirty
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #25 Posted February 22, 2008 That has to be the coolest in all of the UK, Ian ! Really enjoyed the video, and it looks like it sure does work great! :P
