Interesting find under decal

Recommended Posts

this comment is only for the older round hoods and some point I think the colors changed in the late 60s or 70's

I cant be 100% on this, but im almost sure due to knowing im the third owner of this tractor that the dash decal has never been removed.(plus the aging and yellowing of the decal). But during my repaint of my 33E, i was working on the gas tank and was removing the original dash decal on the tank, I was amazed to find the paint underneath looked as good as the day it was new...the glue still stuck to some of it, but it still gives me a great look at the paint. One way im glad i found it, but in another way im disappointed because it is no where close to the international red im painting the tractor back or my nicely restored 654 :scratchead: . Ive had my doubts about the international red for some time now due to ole original tractors ive owned and do have in the shed that there is no way when the IH red fades over time that it will resemble the color of some of my horses, (they turn deeeeep red, almost have a purple color) but now im convinced that the red is deeper (or darker) than the IH Red.....I have a 655 that came from a restorer that passed in Indiana that used a rustoleum paint that matches the dash 10 times closer than the IH red does. I think he had a closer match than i was using.

Guys this is just my opionon on this subject and Im not trying to change anyones mind about paint color, I know we have discussed it alot and I know there are alot varibables in ever finding that perfect paint....I just wanted to share what i found while restoring my 33E. Im personally just convinced IH Red is not the original red for me. But it still looks good!! :hide:

I'm guessing the culprit, if it exists, is the IH red color itself. The Ponds supposedly asked for a close match to IH red in the early years, but it could be that no one really makes a good match for it?

Heck if I know. No two of my tractors are the same color... :hide::scratchead:

Yeah I agree with you. IH red does not match. I used to be able to buy Farm&Fleet Harvest King IH paint and it was darker. But they closed up their stores around here.No other brand I can find will match as good. I too have restored tractors of different red. Just my 2 cents. Ron

I think Ron will probably agree with me on this one. I don't think the IH red that you buy these days even matches the old IH tractors. If you look at a nice original OLD IH, they are a much deeper shade of red than the IH paint that they sell now.

I've used IH red from TSC spray gun paint, rattle can, ect... it is too bright I have a NOS round hood hood and other NOS parts,to compair it to, but I had some paint mixed by our paint supplier (I work at a body shop) in base coat clear, and it is much darker and a very close match.

I was using the Valspar from TSC and was getting low so I picked up another gal. the last gal. was over a year old, so I mixed some of the old paint in the new to help the tint be closer, but it still ended up not matching, I'm glad I mixed them because I spayed some of the new batch, compaired it to the old, and it was 10 shades off, so batch's in the cheaper paint don't always match themselves :scratchead:

I'm in agreement with you all, the Valspar IH Red does seem a little lighter than the origional paint on my older tractors.

I picked up a 1276 a couple of months ago, and have just been touching up a few areas where I've fixed a few cracks etc. On this one I've been using Krylon "Cherry Red", and it seems to be a much closer match...

The tractor is Rust-oleum 7765 Regal Red the trailer is Valspar IH Red. I personal like the Regal Red better.

When I pulled the engine off of my 1045, I found the paint under the oil pan to be PERFECT. I went out and bought about 5 different shades/ brands of paint and sprayed them on the frame, against the original paint.

I found the Krylon "cherry red" to be a perfect match.

I was in the store today and the Cherry Red color did look much closer,,,,Im going to buy some of each and do some testing...i think it will come down to cherry red or regal red...Im going to spray some pieces and then compare ...Wow the cherry red is much cheaper ...i like that!!

Don pictures usally are hard to tell the difference in paint shades..but that picture says it all!!

Now my big question is too take the ranger back apart and start repainting? :scratchead:

Just a thought, The OLD IH red from the original tractors probably contained lead which we all know is a big no no these days.( I'm guessin same goes for WH too?) Could the lead content of the paints from yesteryear effect the way the pigment faded over time? I would have to guess that the lead would somehow react differently with the UV rays and over a long period you would see a big difference in a lead base paint and non-lead base. Just my .02

Good point Bill

but when you mention lead in paint ..................

I'm not sure if lead helped with red paint but it was used mostly in yellows and whites years back.

Well ive been buying alot of red rattle cans and spraying test parts and comparing to paint under the decal..

Here are the test paints (Remember these are all rattle cans)

Valspar IH Red (Restoration series Paint) Tractor supply..$9

Rustoleum Regal Red - Lowes $4

Krylon Cherry Red - True Value $4

Valspar Berry Red - Lowes $4

The paint is still wet, but the wife I have ruled out IH Red (Not deep enough red) and Regal Red..( Too much orange, but better than IH Red).

I am carrying the samples to work to get opinons from other co-workers....we are leaning toward the Berry Red...Wife says the Cherry Red is too deep of Red, but then again 45 year old paint under a decal loses alittle bit shine..LOL...but the berry red is really closest...Cherry running a real close second...I'll see what tomorrow brings with more eyes,, some outside light and dry paint..

one very interesting note - Berry red and Cherry Red drying time was extemely faster than than the rustolem regal red ....i could touch the berry and cherry,,it was almost smooth and dry...but the regal was still very sticky...all in the same enviroment..I did not spray the IH tonight its on my other tractors for comparision...

Other Note: This test is for me only...again im not trying to change anyones mind about paint color...its just a personal thing for my satisfaction,,,and Im just sharing it with you....so do you own testing for your own projects, this is just my on opinion :scratchead:

Hi, Michael,

I can't speak to the color comparison, but I do use the Regal Red on my stuff and yes, it has a very slow drying time. What I have found, though, is that it tends to resist chipping fairly well. I don't know if the formulation contains some plasticizer or what the deal is, but I'm pleased with it. JMHO..... :hide:

Isn't the rustolem an oil based formula & krylon formula much different? Thats why the dry time is so different.(even smells way different) I used to use Krylon for striping my race boats. But over little time they faded quickly, & loss sheen. Dont know about Rustoleum, I used to not like it, due to the slow dry time. Impatient. But for steel, may be a better rust preventative?

In the past when I have repainted one of my horses. I always found a place under an original decal and had this area scanned by the local Dupont automotive paint store. The scan will get you extremely close to the original paint shade. Another good idea is to use an NOS part that has been packaged.

I'd only add that the NOS part would need to have been kept out of the sun.

I have two cans of Krylon Farm & Implement paint IH Red (1818). Brand new. I bought 3 cans, used part of one. I don't like the color. Too dark for my taste. If you need a couple of cans and can't find it locally, I can send this to you for whatever it costs me to mail it plus $5.00 per can.
