875 with a hy-6 problem hydrualic issue

Recommended Posts

creekside

I recently acquired a hy-6 hydrualic lift kit for my 875. I put the lines were they are supposed to be and nothing really happens. No from pouring over hydrostatic book that I have it says something about changing spings and valves. A guy in town says it only takes a few minutes and the right parts. But he isn't sure what to do anymore. I am sure some one on here has had the same problem seeing that not all sunstran units were made for the hydro lift ready from the factory. Please help any pics or part numbers would be great!! :scratchead:

I don't know for sure but I thought you had to change two valves out, I'm keeping a eye on this post as I'm going to put hyd. lift on my 1075, I have a charger10 that is going to donate all the parts for the swap.

I'm digging in the archives.

I beleive this has been covered, but a long time ago.

There are some small parts that you have to put inside the pump itself to get pressure to the HY 6 setup.

Simply putting the lines & cylinder on won't do it.

TT

I can't offer much information, but I do know that the very first Wheel-A-Matic hydro units are different than the ones used in the 1968 to early 1973 tractors. The early models have the tow valve pointing straight out the back of the pump valve block (faces back in to the toolbox area) and the accessory ports are on the very top. I'm thinking that the parts required to add hydraulic lift to the very first Sundstrands are specific to those models, but I could very well be wrong.

The valve/spring/shims are unique to the early series Sundstrands and not easy to find . TT is right , the telltale sign is that odd tow valve- a 1/2" hex headed valve head that has to be opened 1 turn with a wrench and it does face back into the toolbox . I believe if you look up the drawing for that trans model one of those drawings show the valve/spring and shims . It's a matter of installing a needle nosed (bullet shape, almost) valve and spring in one of the front ports . In one rear port there is another spring and check ball as well that makes the hydraulic lift system work . One supplies pressure to the output ports, the other acts as a safety relief since the rear port cap uses shims to set the pressure.

If nothing else, check into the HY-6 drawings at Toro or Sohar's (RCPW parts). I know at one time I did buy a new spring, cap o-rings and some shims as they were still available. However, to find one of those bullet-shaped cone valves I had to pick up a spare trans pump from the same pre-'68 era .

First let me say I'm a new member, and have found this site to be very usefull. in answer to your question, I have been working on my GT14 w/loader since i bought it a year ago. Weak hydraulics, no power etc. i put a new pump and moter in from a Charger. got my power back, bought a 3PT hitch hook it all up, no power to the lift. Bought a different lift cylinder got it all back togather last night not enough power to lift 20lbs. Look all over this site and many others, got good things to check out, fluid, filter, relief valve. In the middle of the night, Charger pump.

Looked today and found 1 Charger did not have a relief attachment valve. Got home checked sure enough didn't have the spring and check valve. Took the parts off my old pump put them in it now Works. So not all Sunstands came with the relief valve spring and check valve. Sorry iI got long winded, and thanks to all of you and you knowledge. Ole mn

The early versions prior to '68, or at least that I've had apart did not come with the lift valve parts-they were part of the HY-6 kit . You literally installed the entire kit including those valve parts and set pressure to spec by the number of shims. Also, of note- the later '68 pump/hydrogear units will bolt right up , provide better volume flow and power and nearly all of them have the lift valves already installed. If nothing else, buy a pump/hydrogear from a 68-73, or 73 and older model , especially the C-series or any unit that originally had a hydraulic lift . Be cautious since most people that part these out don't provide or install plugs when they remove the hoses and dirt is thy enemy!

Does anybody have a set of shims and valves that they might want to sell? :scratchead:

That would make life easier. I have a stroke and I can hardly lift the blower up anymore. This would be the perfect solution if I just make it work :hide:
