Rollerman 290 #1 Posted September 19, 2009 Recently picked up a Roof 60 with the 60" deck & a very tired Kohler K 482. Engine runs terrible but that can be remedied....everything else seems to be in good shape with a little wear & tear. These were made as commercial mowers back through the 70ies & early 80ies from what I have found so far by Roof manufacturing in IL. The Roof 60 also had a more exotic brother, the Roof Palemino....thats the one with the flat fender jeep look a like body. Thats about the extent of what I have found out searching the web so far. Would like to know if any RS members know more than I do or know of someone? I'd like to find out more of the specifics for serviceing. Such as who supplied the hydro transaxle on them. Plans are to get this thing running, pretty it up some, add a second seat, carry all & then send it to the inlaws. They have a 60" Bad Boy Z turn, but with there large yard & second mower is always handy....plus this will run as fast as a golf cart in hi gear.

Kelly 1,029 #6 Posted September 20, 2009 I've never seen one in person, and mostly hear about the jeep one as Perry said, I see how easy it was to see a jeep in that, or maybe a moon rover
Suburban 550 28 #7 Posted September 20, 2009 Pretty neat, Stephen. Never seen or heard of them before. :hide:
Rollerman 290 #8 Posted September 20, 2009 or maybe a moon rover Funny...thats how I described it to a few of my friends from work...."a moon rover looking with a big mower deck. Still digging for info & looks like they were made starting in the late 60ies with a few built up into the early 80ies. The Roof 60 is more common than the Jeep styled Palemino, but I haven't seen to many Roof 60ies I have seen Palemino's running around at the tractor shows though. The Roof 60 & Palemino are pretty much identical...frame, drivetrain, engine, mower, etc, etc....just the Palemino looks a whole lot cooler. I did run it around in the alley a bit yesterday afternoon & tried out the deck. It lays down a fine scalp mark. Here is a link from Yesterdays Tractor site with pics & some info on the Roof Palemino. If your a Jeep fan & haven't seen or heard of one of these...try not to drool to hard when you click the link. http://www.ytmag.com//articles/artint154.htm

CasualObserver 3,408 #10 Posted September 21, 2009 Stephen, that's really cool. Seen many pictures, but I've never seen one in real life. For more info you might try Jim C the president of the VGTCOA... I seem to remember he did a research article on the Roofs in a newsletter a little while back. perry 82 #11 Posted September 21, 2009 I have a little info for you. Roof mfg.Co. of Pontiac Ill. bilt the Palamino from 1968-1971. Only 600 were produced. From what i have herd thay were quite expensive at that time. In 1972 Roof rebilt the unit into a utility mower. Roof 60. All models caried 60" mower decks. The Palamino's are about 3/4 the size of a jeep. Spare parts and service for Roof mowers can be obtained from: Midwest Manufacturing, Inc. 509 West First Street P.O. Box 485 Gibson City, IL 60936 Tel: 217-784-5161 Attention: John Carlock - Extension 226 roof walkbehind
